Better Booty Workout for Stronger Glutes

Hi Everyone!

Today’s workout is focused on sculpting the booty from every angle. Did you know that strong glutes can help protect you from back pain? Your glutes and core help you maintain proper pelvic alignment, which means better posture and optimized biomechanics.

I love the functional benefits of fitness. My inner anatomy nerd comes out when I write my workouts to make sure we are activating all of the muscles in the areas we are targeting.

This is a throwback workout, so I included the link for the original blog post below. You will find the full length workout video below, as well as the original blog post and the photo tutorial in the link.

My goal for today is to film one (hopefully two!) new workouts. I will try to go live while I am filming if the logistics work out. I am planning to do more live workouts to share on my Facebook page.

Let me know what your favorite exercise is from today’s workout. Was there a move you struggled with? A move you loved? For me, I often love the hard moves, because those are the ones I can tell are helping me to get stronger. I also like the single leg exercises, because I know that it targets the muscles and helps prevent muscular imbalances.

Have fun with today’s workout! There are new workout videos coming.

Stopping the Comparison Game: 5 Ways to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Standard

Have you ever had a moment when you thought to yourself, “How did I let myself get this out of shape?” or “I wish I looked like that” or “I wish I could do that.”

It happened to me last night. I did my first run in ages. It was hard. My running has been sporadic at best since my last Half Marathon 7 months ago. I teach a yoga course, and afterward I decided to take advantage of the gym at the University, and hop on the treadmill. Our single digit temperatures and mass amounts of snow have given me plenty of excuses not to go running, but I am at the school teaching 3X per week so I decided to make use of that time and finish my workout with a run.

I put the treadmill on my normal speed, and I felt pretty tired by the time I hit the one mile mark. I looked at the counter on the treadmill, and realized that I was running what used to be my average pace per mile for a half marathon. So it should be a pace I can easily maintain for a quick 5K run. I felt like I was starting over from scratch.

Enter reality check and subsequent negative thinking. I caught my brain starting to play the comparison game. This used to be easy for you. I can’t believe you’re feeling this pace after just one mile. You used to be so much faster, fitter and healthier. How could you let this happen? Being on a treadmill can be quite tedious on it’s own. I did not need a negative chorus chiming in from my own brain.

I made a conscious effort to change the story I was telling myself. Instead of “look how much you suck now” I started thinking, “You are making a great choice to improve your health and fitness. If you keep this up you are going to see great improvements in your speed and endurance.”

When I teach my Yoga class, each semester I share this quote with my students:

Comparison is the Thief of Joy -Theodore Roosevelt.

In my class I use it as a reminder that it doesn’t matter how flexible your neighbor is. It doesn’t matter if you struggle in a pose, or you don’t look like the most recent #Fitspiration you saw on Instagram or Pinterest. What matters is that you are showing up consistently to your practice and you are expanding past what you currently see as your limitations. Practice and consistency are the true “secrets” to progress. If you keep showing up change will happen.

So how can you stop comparing yourself to others (or even to past versions of yourself)? It’s not always a simple matter, because for many people we have been affirming the process of comparison for so long that we don’t even realize we are doing it, but just like in our fitness with practice and consistency we can start to change our thought process.

  1. Change the Story: If you find yourself caught in the cycle of negative self talk, make a conscious effort to re-phrase the story you are telling yourself. For example, if you are tearing yourself down for unhealthy food choices, remind yourself that food isn’t inherently good or evil. Making a less nutritious food choice doesn’t diminish your value or end your journey toward making healthier choices.
  2. When you start comparing yourself to someone else (or a past version of yourself) take a moment to recognize something you appreciate about yourself. Make a conscious effort to stop the negative thought, and change it to a positive thought. We strengthen the neural pathways in our brain that we use more frequently. So make the positive neural pathways stronger, so they are easier to access and follow.
  3. Recognize and Celebrate Victories Along the Way. When it comes to fitness there are so many non-scale victories (NSV) that you can celebrate! Did you make it though an entire interval of an exercise that you used to struggle though? Yay You!!! Were you able to run one minute longer before taking a walking break? That’s Awesome! Recognizing these victories will help build your confidence, and reinforce the fact that your body is meant for something other than fitting into a certain size clothing, or hitting a certain number on the scale.
  4. Anchor Yourself In the Present Moment: Sometimes our thoughts run away from us. Before we know it we have a mental train with no brakes hurtling full speed ahead. To help exit the thought process you can anchor yourself into the present moment. To do this I focus on my breathing. I read a book by Thich Nhat Hanh that described a technique I found very useful: to help focus on the present moment take in a breath and focus on the experience, saying “Breathing in, I am breathing in. Breathing out, I am breathing out.” It helps you to orient yourself to the present, instead of ruminating on the past, or feeling anxiety over the future.
  5. Take Time Each Day to Be Self Positive: Make being kind to yourself a habit. We are often quick to focus on the negative at the expense of the positive. Practice self kindness. Look in the mirror, or ask a friend to tell you something good about yourself. It can be physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, or all of the above.

Do you have any other techniques you use to stop comparing yourself to others? Please feel free to share them in the comments below.

***Note: This is not a substitute for help from a mental health professional. If you feel that you are caught in negative thought processes that are impacting your ability to function please seek the help of someone who can give you the individualized care that you deserve. You can certainly use the techniques described above in conjunction with help from a certified professional who understands your unique needs.***

Tighter, Stronger Abs: 15 Minute HIIT Bodyweight Core Workout

Hi Friends!

I hope you are ready for today’s workout. With today’s workout series we are focusing on strengthening our abs. This routine will work your midsection from every direction, to give you a stronger, healthier core.

Since having my son I find that I struggle with a lot of core exercises that used to be easy for me. I need to rebuild my strength and endurance, but I have really struggled with consistency. I had plans to start the new year strong with brand new workouts, but then the flu struck. That was quite the setback.

So here I am again, not quite starting from scratch, but re-developing my routine. I taught a new workout to my group fitness class tonight. It felt so good to be doing something I love.

I also took some time before class to get in a bonus cardio burn. I alternated doing 10 Burpees with 100 High Knees, about 5 times, and it had me feeling great for class. Plus, I enjoyed the cardio challenge.

Remember, you don’t need any equipment to get in an awesome workout. If you are up to it, you can repeat this workout up to 3X. You can add my bonus cardio burn if you’re feeling extra feisty. It’s important to push yourself, but it’s equally important to listen to your body. You will progress your strength and fitness level, by learning when to push, and when to rest.

I am planning to start filming workouts for a new workout series this weekend. I’m super excited to share my new program with you.

Have fun with today’s workout routine!

Hi Everyone!

I am finally finding my groove again after being super sick with the flu. I haven’t tried anything high impact yet. I have focused on stretching, and some simple exercises just to get my body used to moving again.

For those of you who haven’t beed sidelined by sickness, I posted this throwback workout series yesterday: Arms and Legs Burnout Combo. As I ease back into filming, I am going to start with some Low Impact workouts. We will call it my LIIT (Low Impact Interval Training) Workout series.

I am working on an entirely new workout program that will combine HIIT, LIIT, Yoga and Strength Training. The goal of the program is to improve functional fitness and overall health and wellness. I want to also share a healthy eating plan to go with the program.

I need to get back to my routine, and work on re-building my immune system. I’m sure that I am exposed to a lot more sickness now, just by virtue of being a parent, but I still want to decrease my chances of catching future sickness as much as possible. Let’s face it, getting sick is a part of life, but when we are healthy we can improve our bodies response to illnesses.

Making Progress on my flexibility for splits. This is my good (more flexible) side, but I am stretching both directions.

I am teaching another yoga course this semester, so I will be teaching yoga two times per week, and a Full Body Blast class one time per week. I plan on filming my Body Blast Workouts to share with you as part of my new series. I like to share with you guys exactly what I am doing with my workouts. Full transparency.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout! Let me know what you think of my new workout series ideas.

Have fun!

When to Go to the Hospital for the Flu

The Flu. It’s dreaded, avoided, and much talked about during the cold months. Right now it has reached epidemic proportions and is widespread in every state in the USA. This year’s strain is particularly intense, and has a higher than average mortality rate.

I have a confession. I should have been hospitalized during my recent bout with the flu. My fever was very high. It reached 103.7 and I couldn’t walk, and felt incoherent. My husband wanted to take me to the hospital, but I refused to go. Although I ended up being okay, this was a stupid decision on my part. It could have even been a deadly decision if my fever hadn’t come down.

I told my husband the plan for who to contact if I got worse, or if I passed out. I knew that going to the ER might be my only option, but I didn’t want to go.

I had a lot of reasons. I didn’t want to expose my toddler to even more sick people in the ER. My son was already sick, and if he got worse I wanted to be there to make sure he went to the hospital if needed. We had houseguests (who were also sick) and I felt like I needed to be the one to take care of everyone. It was scary, and I said a prayer asking God not to let me die that night. I want to see my son grow, and I didn’t want to leave my husband alone.

Even though I ended up being okay, and I am on the road back to recovery, I made a stupid decision. I should have gone to the hospital.

What are the signs that you should go to the hospital for the flu:

1. For adults if your fever is 103 degrees Fahrenheit or greater. For children under 3 months if fever is 100.4 F or higher. For children over 3 months if fever is 104 F or higher. Contact doctor if fever will not go down, persists, or does not respond to medicine.

2. If you can’t catch your breath or breathing is painful.

3. If you can’t think clearly and your speech is slurred.

4. If you are too weak to stand.

5. If you have chest pain or severe abdominal pain.

6. If you become dehydrated.

7. If you have severe headache/neck stiffness.

8. If you feel so sick that you feel like something is wrong, and you need help. Listen to your instincts.

Treating the flu:

If you have the flu the best thing you can do is stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.

Call your doctor for an anti-viral medicine to shorten the length of the flu. Anti-virals are effective if started within the first 48 hours of symptoms.

Stay home. The flu is highly contagious, and it can be deadly. Try not to spread the germs. You should be fever free for at least 24 hours before venturing out, but you may still be contagious if you are still coughing. The flu is generally contagious for about one week from the onset of symptoms.

Jesse and Maverick. Fighting the flu.

About the Flu Shot:

My husband and my son got the flu shot this year. I did not. They both had very mild flu symptoms, more along the lines of a bad cold with a mild fever. This was one of the worst cases of the flu and worst fevers I have ever had in my life.

The flu shot can help prevent the flu, but even if you are exposed to a mutated strain that the shot doesn’t protect against, it can reduce your symptoms.

I work as an Occupational Therapist with the geriatric population. I normally get the flu shot every year, because they are an at risk population. The very old, very young and those with compromised immunity are much more likely to die from the flu.

Misconceptions and Flu Facts:

1. The flu is NOT a stomach bug. What most people call the “stomach flu” is actually norovirus or gastroenteritis. Typically influenza doesn’t include vomiting. Children are more likely to vomit when they have the flu than adults. Some patients will experience diarrhea and vomiting, but this is a less common symptom.

2. The flu is a respiratory illness. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, sore throat, congestion, headache, fever and body aches.

3.The flu is airborn, and spread through droplets. That means it can be spread through coughing or sneezing, skin to skin contact, saliva, or touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

4. The flu is a big deal. Many people shrug it off as “just the flu” but it is one of the most deadly illnesses every year. On average about 36,000 flu deaths occur in the US each year, and that number increases to between 250,000-500,000 worldwide. The worst known flu year was the epidemic of 1918, which killed between 50 million and 100 million people. It is important not only to care for yourself, but also to avoid spreading the flu. The very old and very young are much more likely to die from the flu.

Hello Everyone!

Today’s workout is a quick routine that will work your entire core. I am pairing this routine with a 10-minute cardio jump rope workout (posted below). I love combining core strengthening exercises with a great cardio routine. The combination is super efficient for helping to improve your fitness, and giving you visible results.

I am also practicing my stretches. One of my goals for this year is to continue to work on my flexibility. I am going to stretch every day this year. I have added two new exercises to my split/lower body stretching routine. I will film a tutorial to share the new stretching additions. You can find my original routine here: Stretches to Improve Flexibility for Splits.

This stretching program is my go too for lower back pain, and even helped me overcome IT Band Syndrome last year. Even if you don’t care about achieving a split, it’s a great routine for the legs, hips and back.

Another goal I have for the year is to share more of the holistic aspects of health and wellness. I believe that true health occurs when you have balance in your life: mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and social. Health isn’t just lack of sickness. I am striving to find that balance and get on a better routine.

What are your goals this year?

I will see you soon!

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to this week’s workout schedule. This is a great, balanced, workout routine. You will work your entire body, burning fat, and improving your fitness level. I also included a great yoga and stretching routine. Please don’t skip the yoga. I know that a lot of people skip stretching. Keeping your flexibility not only helps prevent injuries, but also helps you maximize your workouts.

Why should you include stretching into your routine? When your muscles are flexible you are able to move through the full range of motion for each exercise, and maintain good form. When you are limited by tight muscles it is easier for your body/muscles to develop compensatory movement patterns. That means that instead of activating the targeted muscle, other muscles are taking over to assist with the movement. So stretching helps prevent injury, and helps you activate the appropriate muscles.

Keeping your back flat, and hinging at the hips (instead of arching through the back) helps you maximize the stretch for your hamstrings and low back. Using the chair assists with form, and also adds a stretch through the upper back/shoulders.

Eat Right: This week focus on pairing your workouts with nutritious food choices. Food is fuel for your body. Your body works best when it is fueled by foods loaded with vitamins, and variety. Remember to eat your colors. Different colored fruits and veggies have different vitamins. Also, be sure to drink enough water. Last week I noticed that I was ravenously hungry, even shortly after eating. I knew I was eating enough, and couldn’t figure out why I was having such intense food cravings. I realized that I was dehydrated. I was so busy that I wasn’t drinking enough water. Your body can confuse thirst and hunger signals. As soon as I took a sip of water I realized how thirsty I actually was.

*Don’t over hydrate either. It is possible (and dangerous!) to drink too much water. I aim to have about 8-12 eight oz glasses of water per day. Depending on how thirsty I am (and how much of a sweat I worked up during exercise) I may have a bit more or less.

Staying hydrated.

Let me know what you think of the workouts. I hope that you enjoy this week’s schedule.  If you post a check in on social media don’t forget to tag me in it! I definitely recommend tracking your workouts in some way (whether via social media, on a calendar, or some other way that works for you).

Have fun!

Hi Everyone!

I have a fun workout schedule for you this week. These workouts will work and challenge your entire body. This is a balanced workout program that will help you strengthen your entire body, burn fat, and build lean muscle.

Remember, muscle is great for creating a strong healthy body, and a faster metabolism. Lean muscle is also what gives your body shape. I still meet a lot of women who are afraid of putting on muscle (confession….I used to be afraid of putting on too much muscle before I ever started working out!) Strong muscles are amazing. They help boost your confidence, and appreciation for your own body. Exercise and sports help us to realize that our bodies are capable of so much.

Each workout link below is clickable, so be sure to bookmark this page to return to throughout the week.

Life Update: Jesse’s birthday was yesterday. We took a quick trip to an indoor water park, Kalahari to celebrate. I still want to do something special this week to celebrate how wonderful my husband is, and how much we appreciate him. Does anyone have any ideas? I am open to suggestions.

Have fun!

Delicious Dairy Free Vegan Butternut Squash Soup

Standard

Hi Everyone,

Are you ready for something delicious? As the weather turns cold I find that I crave soup. This week alone I have made Chicken Vegetable Soup and this tasty Butternut Squash Soup.

Butternut Squash is stock full of vitamins, and is a great addition to a healthy diet. I try to incorporate plenty of different colors into my food choices, because that means I am getting a variety of vitamins and minerals. Butternut Squash is high in potassium, fiber, vitamin A, manganese, vitamin C, Iron, Folate, Zinc, and more!

So let’s talk a little bit about what I went through to make this bowl of deliciousness. This is not a hard recipe. It’s actually pretty simple. Until you add a curious 17-month old toddler into the mix. My baby is now tall enough to reach things on the counter, even when they are pushed back away from the edge. This made chopping the butternut squash an adventure. He is especially taken with my orange chopping knife, and repeatedly requested “That! That!” Luckily, he was distracted by the music making ability of banging two whisks together.

My son loves helping me cook, and although he understands the concept of “hot” I have to frequently remind him to stay away from the stove. In my hurry to get things done, before he could get into anything crazy or touch the stove in the .05 seconds while my back was turned, I overflowed my food processor. This led to a small volcano of soup. I somehow managed to keep my son out of the overflow of Butternut Squash puree, which involved dancer like dexterity and convolutions.

Finally, after cleaning the kitchen, I sat down to enjoy this delicious soup. It tasted as good as I hoped, but a few bites in my son decided to add his own culinary twist to my meal. He placed his half eaten pear into my bowl.

I share this story as a reminder, that as beautifully presented as things look on Instagram, somethings things are a lot crazier and more realistic behind the scenes. Messes are made. Life can be wonderfully messy, but sometimes that is what keeps things interesting. Maybe a little pear puree would have been a good addition to this recipe. Or maybe, things just go a little wonky sometimes, and that’s okay too.

I hope you enjoy the recipe! If you try it (or make any tasty modifications!) let me know. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! If you haven’t already, don’t forget to check out this week’s workout schedule: 5 Home Workouts to Try This Week.

Ingredients:

-1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil (you can use olive oil if you prefer)
-1 Onion-diced
-1 Medium Butternut Squash Peeled and Cubed
-2-3 Cups Vegetable Broth
-Sea Salt
-Black Pepper
-Curry Powder (I used yellow)
-Turmeric
-Ground Cinnamon
-1 14-oz can Coconut Milk (use lite for a lower calorie soup, regular for a creamier soup-If you decide to use a thinner milk/milk substitute you will have to decrease the amount of milk)
-1-2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup

Optional Garnish:
-Pumpkin Seeds
-Full fat coconut milk
-Cilantro or Fresh Herb of Choice (I used cilantro because I had it on hand)

Directions:

  1. In a large soup pan add coconut oil and onions. Sauté over medium heat, stirring frequently until onions shimmer.
  2. Add cubed butternut squash. Season with salt, pepper, curry and cinnamon. (I used a dash of each and didn’t measure.) Stir to lightly coat squash with seasoning. Cover and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add coconut milk, vegetable broth and maple syrup.
  4. Bring to a light boil. Once boiling reduce flame to low. Cover and simmer for 15-18 minutes-until squash is tender enough to easily stick a fork into.
  5. Blend until creamy.  (this is easiest with an immersion blender). If using a regular blender: transfer to blender in batches and puree until creamy. Return to pot.
  6. Cook on low, and add additional seasoning to taste. (I didn’t add any extra seasoning, but everyone has different taste preferences.)
  7. Add garnish and serve.
  8. Enjoy!

Hi Everyone!

I have a brand new workout for you today! Today marks the first day of my newest DietBet workout challenge. Usually I host a new DietBet challenge during the New Year, to help people with some motivation for achieving their resolutions.

This year, I am trying something different. It can be really hard to stay on track and make healthy choices during the holidays. So I decided to start a program that will run through the holiday season, and start the New Year off right. We can all stay on track together.

If you want to join my DietBet, but haven’t signed up yet, you can do so here: www.dietbet.com/benderfitness. It’s a great motivator if you have weight loss goals, because you win money for losing weight.

I want to know what your goals are this year. It can be health related, life related, fitness related. Whatever your goal is I want to hear it. Leave me a comment, tag me in an Instagram post. I want us to achieve our goals together. I love seeing people succeed.

Diet: I am going to be re-focusing on the Anti-Inflammatory Diet & Grocery List. I have mentioned in the past the fact that I am lactose intolerant. Unfortunately, I also love cheese, so I start sneaking in small amounts, and then slightly larger amounts. The result is swelling, bloating, inflammation, and weight fluctuations. Even my hands swell, and I get more frequent headaches. It’s not fun, and it’s not good for my body. So I am re-commiting to making healthier food choices.

I hope that you enjoy today’s workout! Let me know what you think of the workout, and how you are feeling. Focus on form, but don’t forget to have fun, or at least give yourself a pat on the back for getting in your workout today.

Let’s keep making healthy choices together!

5 Home Workouts to Try This Week

Good Morning Everyone!

It’s a brand new week, and we have some exciting things on the schedule!

My new DietBet challenge starts on Tuesday! You can still join here: Jump Start Your Holiday Weight Loss. You win money for hitting your weight loss goals, so it’s a great way to stay accountable during the holidays, and get a head start on any weight loss related New Year’s resolutions.

I will be sharing some brand new workouts this week, but I made this schedule for anyone who wants to get a jump start on the challenge. Having a workout plan can be a game changer, and really help you keep on track.

5 Ways to Stay on Track During this Challenge:

  1. Stay Accountable: Write down each workout on your calendar, do Instagram or Facebook check-in posts. Commit to doing 5 workouts this week, and create a way to track them.
  2. Prep for Success: Make healthy eating easier. Make a plan, and have healthy foods on hand. If you are a snacker get some healthy fruits and vegetables, Greek yogurt, or other healthy snacks and keep them handy.
  3. Set a Realistic Goal: Take a truthful look at your schedule. How much time do you have to workout and which days work best? Having a plan makes you more likely to achieve your goal.
  4. Get Social: Having friends or accountability buddies to join you in the challenge can help you stay on track.
  5. Workouts don’t replace unhealthy food choices. For the best results pair exercise with healthy food choices. Remember, food is your fuel, and higher quality food will help your body perform better.

I am going to be following my own advice, so that I can be more consistent with my workouts. I will share photos on Instagram and Facebook of my plans. I would love to see what you are doing as well. Let’s motivate each other, and share our techniques for success.

I will be seeing you soon with new workouts. I have some great new routines to share with you all.

Hi Everyone!

Are you ready to do something wonderful for your health and fitness today? You can to the right place! Today’s workout is fast, only 12-minutes per round, but it’s a fantastic workout for your Legs and Core. Don’t worry, we won’t neglect your arms and back either, because this routine utilizes plenty of compound (multi-joint) exercises to maximize the effectiveness of this workout.

During a few exercises in today’s workout video I use a dumbbell. If you don’t have one, you can choose to do the exercises with body weight. You can also grab something from around the house (a jug of water or something else you have handy) to add some resistance to your routine. The added resistance will help increase the workout burn, and build lean muscle.

Upcoming Challenge: I will be hosting a new workout challenge in December to help keep us all on track and accountable. It’s also a great way to jump start any New Year’s resolutions we have about our health. If you aren’t familiar with DietBet this is how it works:

  1. You make a $20 bet that you are able to lose 4% of your body weight over the course of 4 weeks.
  2. When weigh in starts (up to two days before the game officially starts) you log into your account and you will be assigned a check in word. You submit weight and photos with the check in word.
  3. Throughout the 4-weeks you focus on hitting your goal (with help from my workouts and meal tips!)
  4. When the game ends up have two days to submit a weigh in with a new word which will be assigned to you.

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time again!

Today’s workout is low impact on your joints, but challenging. This routine is focused on strengthening and sculpting your midsection, butt and thighs. You can go through this workout once, or repeat it up to four times.

It’s important to establish a routine that you can stick too. Consistency will help you grow stronger, healthier and more confident. Lately, being consistent has been a big struggle for me. I’m planning to use my DietBet challenge to re-focus. I was really able to stick to my workouts during my #BFFitFall workout challenge. I will post my workout check-ins during the challenge, and I hope you join me.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to today’s workout. I have three short workout videos for you today. Each video is between 5-10 minutes long. Quick workouts can be easier to customize and fit in throughout the day.

You can choose to go through each workout once, or repeat any of the workouts to make it a longer, more intense routine.

The struggle is real: Lately, I have really been struggling to get in my workouts. Last week I wasn’t able to film any new workouts because we couldn’t find a baby sitter due to the holidays. It feels like every time I get my workouts and consistency on track something happens to throw me off track again. It’s like the old Paula Abdul song: “I take two steps forward, I take two steps back.”

To add to the issue I was having back pain and a muscle spasm in my low back. I couldn’t get rid of it, until I finally started my split stretching routine. I can still feel some tightness there, but I will continue to do my stretches.

New Workout Challenge: I am planning a new workout challenge. It helps me to stay on track, and it will be a great way to jump start our fitness goals together through the new year. I will be posting more about the challenge as I cement the details.

What are your holiday goals? Let me know in the comments below. I have so many fitness related goals that it feels a little overwhelming, but I am going to put together a list and share it with you. We can achieve our goals together. We need to remember to treat ourselves with kindness on this journey.

I will be seeing you soon with new workouts.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to today’s workout. It’s quick, and it is an awesome strength building, fat burning exercise routine.

I love these fast workouts. This one only takes 10-minutes per round. The reason that I love it is because I can make it fit into my hectic schedule. If I have time I can repeat it for a longer workout. Or I can add it as a cardio burn to any of the other workouts on my site.

These days time is at a premium. For my workouts it’s get it done quickly, or it’s not happening. That was actually one of the reasons I started BenderFitness. When I started graduate school I primarily did yoga and running. I was almost done with my yoga certification, and I had already started developing my own workout style.

Suddenly graduate school was taking up most of my time. We had classes from 8AM to 6PM most days, and over an hour commute each way. It wasn’t done there, we still needed to do reading assignments and study. My workout time was severely diminished. I started creating my own workouts, and feeling stronger and healthier than ever before.

Fast forward to my second year in graduate school. I missed teaching yoga, and I needed something outside of school that I loved and was passionate about. So we filmed out first workout video, and slowly but surely we developed the workout database and website that you see today.

So why am I reminiscing and sharing this story with you today? It’s a reminder that life gets crazy and busy. My life is still crazy, busy, although in a different way now that I have my son. Be kind to yourself. Remember that sometimes getting in “only” 10-minutes of exercise is an awesome feat. Remember that by showing up today for your workout you are making a choice to do something great for yourself, your body, and your overall health and wellness.

Whether you do one round of today’s workout, or three rounds, I want to give you kudos. You are awesome. You showed up. You made the choice to take an active role in your own health and wellness. You are doing great.

Thank you for working out with me,

Melissa

Hi Everyone!

Are you ready to get in an awesome workout? This is a quick exercise routine. If you follow along with the video it will only take you 15-minutes to get through the workout. If you are up to repeating it, and want a longer workout you can give it a go.

If you don’t have a stability ball don’t worry. There are always modifications. The elevated leg series can be done on the floor or with your foot propped up on a chair or bench. The ball pull can be changed to a frogger. No equipment? No worries.

This workout routine is a throwback routine from one of my 30-Day Workout Challenges.

This week I am focusing on cultivating gratitude. Every day I take some time and thing about everything I am grateful for. It’s a simple exercise, but one that I believe really helps to increase joy in every day life.

It’s important to exercise your body, but it is equally important to exercise the mind. To me, health isn’t just the absence of sickness. Health is physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. What are you grateful for today? It can be anything.

New Workouts: With the holiday this week we are having trouble finding a baby sitter for filming. As soon as I am able to I will be posting brand new workouts. In the mean time I hope you are enjoying the throwback workouts.

When you are finished with your workout, let me know what you thought of the exercises. Did you have a favorite move that you want to see make a comeback in future videos? Leave a comment and let me know!

Hi Everyone!

It has been a heck of a week in the Bender household. The kind of week where as soon as one person gets over an illness, the next family member gets it. Somehow, I have managed to stay healthy, but I did not make it through the week totally unscathed.

For the past week I have been having right lower back pain. It’s worse after sitting, but I know I am having either a muscle spasm or some type of SI Joint pain. That means a chiropractor and or massage will be in my near future. Typically yoga stretches help me get rid of any aches and pains, but this one is hanging tough.

So how are my workouts going you ask? They haven’t been. I taught a Body Blast class on Wednesday, and Yoga on Monday/Friday, but outside of that exercise has been a no go, while I focus on stretching, and taking care of my sick family.

That also means that going into Thanksgiving week I am feeling freshly motivated to bust out some new workouts, and get back on track with filming. The speed bumps seem to be more frequent these days, but I won’t let them turn into road blocks. I have some great new workouts ready to be filmed for you. I posted the list of exercises for one of the new routines on my Instagram and Facebook pages.

For today’s workout I choose a 20-Minute Total Body Workout Routine. It’s efficient and challenging (in a good way!) I use a dumbbell and stability ball. If you don’t have equipment don’t worry. Check out the video and photo tutorial below for modifications.

When you are finished with your workout, let me know what you thought of the exercises. Did you have a favorite move that you want to see make a comeback in future videos? Leave a comment and let me know!

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to today’s workout! This is one of my favorite throwback workouts. The reason I like it so much is because it is broken up into 5-minute increments. You will work your entire body, but you can hit pause and grab a drink between rounds. Sometimes those quick breaks, really allow us to push ourselves a little bit harder during each workout segment.

This workout does start out with the cardio blast portion of the workout, so be sure to do a warm-up before starting. Warming up will help protect your body from injury, but it also helps you maximize the efficiency of your workout. Once your body, muscles, and lungs, are warmed up you can work at a more intense level, so you burn more from the get-go. It also won’t be quite a shock to the system to go from zero to cardio blast if you get in your warm-up first.

I posted a 5-Minute Warm-Up video below. Try it out before your workout and let me know if you think it made a difference. Maverick was so tiny when I filmed that warm-up video! I love seeing how itty bitty he used to be. It’s mind boggling how quickly children grow. The amount of perseverance they have as they try things over and over again is amazing. It’s a lesson we can all apply to our lives.

How did he get so big? 16-months & making faces for the camera.

Let me know what you thought of the exercises. Did you have a favorite move that you want to see make a comeback in future videos? Leave a comment and let me know!

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today’s workout is a quick, total body workout. It’s a great one to build strength and burn fat. Focus on using proper form, and check out the tutorial video if you aren’t sure what the exercises are.

Go at your own pace, but don’t be afraid to sweat and breath hard. Breaking through plateaus and building strength, requires you to push outside of your comfort zone. You train your mind and body to know how hard you are able to work.

This has been a really crazy week for us. We had a lot going on, so I was only able to film one new workout. It was a good one though! If you haven’t tried it yet you can find it here: Total Body Home Workout: No Equipment Exercises.

In much sadder news, our coach and running guru, Shep, lost his wife unexpectedly this week. She was an amazing person. If you would like to say a prayer, send some positive thoughts, or leave a message or encouragement for him he is on Instagram: @shep123run All of the running advice we share here has been learned from Shep, and he has coached Jesse since he was a high school Cross Country runner.

Running with Shep and Monty.

I ran with him yesterday, and Jesse is out running with him now, but I believe having a strong community of love can really help people get through the hard times.

I hope you all have a wonderful day today. Please hug someone you love extra close, or do a Random Act of Kindness in honor of Shep’s wife, Sharon. <3

Let me know what you thought of the exercises. Did you have a favorite move that you want to see make a comeback in future videos? Leave a comment and let me know!
