Hello Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today’s workout is focused on the lower body. This program will help shape and strengthen your legs, thighs, and glutes. The routine below will take 30-minutes total, and includes a 5-minute warm-up and 5-minute cool-down.

Yesterday we focused on strengthening our core and arms, so today we are working the lower body. I filmed this workout back in October, when my baby boy was only 3-months old. It’s hard to believe he is almost one already.

5K Race. My first 5K pushing Maverick in his stroller. Me and Maverick, Coach Shep & Jesse.

Quote for today: “You have to have confidence in your ability, and then be tough enough to follow through.” – Rosalynn Carter.

Motivation for today: We are all busy people. Wherever you are in your fitness journey (and your life journey) I am sure there are days when it’s hard to put in the work to achieve your goals. You can want your goal with all of your might. Wanting alone isn’t enough. You need to have follow through.

Life and fitness will not be easy every day. There will be days when you are motivated, and you can’t wait to exercise. There are also days when you are tired and dragging, and it’s the last thing you want to do. You need to have follow through on the good and bad days. Create a goal and plan for yourself, and make it happen. If you miss a day don’t let it through you off track. Get back in there and follow through with your plan. Taking a detour doesn’t mean you are lost forever (although it may feel like it at that moment).

Up and Coming: Yesterday Jesse and I did a new track workout. I will be sharing that with you. Our workout was courtesy of our running guru Shep. Shep has coached Jesse since high school. I highly recommend following Shep on Instagram Shep123Run. Any time Jesse and I have a running question Coach Shep is the person we turn to. He will be launching his own running blog soon.

I will be filming new workouts tomorrow. Have fun with today’s workout! Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Hi Everyone!

Are you ready for today’s workout? It only takes 10-minutes per round! Is 10 minutes too short for you? You always have the option to repeat it for a longer workout or pair it with a different workout routine. The great thing about short workouts is that you can modify them to fit your schedule and routine. Sometimes I get in one round of my workouts, other times I repeat it 3X. It’s all about what is functional for your schedule.

You’re in for some fun because Jesse is teaching today’s workout. He has a great personality and energy. He usually makes me laugh a few times during the workout. If you hear giggling from behind the camera that’s me. Grab a dumbbell if you have one. If you don’t have access to equipment can do the exercises with body weight only.

This week I am focusing on filming more new workouts. I will also be posting a new running schedule. I did a 5K on Saturday, and several people on Facebook indicated that they would like to see a running schedule to pair with my workouts.

If you are interested in more information about running, or running specific workouts you can find more articles here: Bender Fitness Running Schedules and Workouts. You can also post any questions or comments below if you want to learn about a topic I haven’t written about yet.

I think my IT Band has finally recovered! I will continue to stretch, and focus on staying healthy, but I had no issues during my race. That brings me so much joy! Being injured is a great exercise in patience, but I don’t recommend it to anyone.

Have fun with today’s workout!

Hi Everyone!

I have a brand new workout for you today! Today’s workout will take 20-Minutes per round. You can choose to go through it once, or you can repeat it up to 3X. I went through this workout once, and then finished up with my new Stretching for Beginners Workout.

Stretching for Beginners

Prior to starting this workout be sure to warm up. Warming up helps prevent injury, and will also allow you to maximize your workout results. When you are warmed up your body is able to work at a higher level from the moment the timer starts. When you skip your warm up your body is not working at it’s full capacity until several minutes into the workout.

I have a confession: I have been skipping my warm-ups. This is my virtual slap on the wrist, and reminder to myself to get my body warmed up. I never know exactly how long I will have to complete my workout. It is much trickier to fit it all in with a baby, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

The Workout: This is a full body workout, and it incorporates cardio bursts throughout the routine. I chose to do High Knees, but you can choose any cardio that you want. I list several cardio ideas in the video, but after completing the workout I thought Kettle Bell Swings would have been a good option.

I completed this workout with body weight only, but you can always add some resistance to increase the intensity. Great ideas to up the ante: are weighted vests, or performing some of the exercises with dumbbells.

Up and Coming Workouts: I have a special Kids Fitness Edition workout video headed your way. I am babysitting my niece and nephew once every week. Today they requested to be in a workout video. Obviously they know how to totally melt my heart. They were naturals! We did a quick, kid friendly workout that I look forward to sharing with you.

Not Fitness Related: I can’t believe that my baby is almost one! How has this year flown by so quickly? Every day he learns something new. Time really does seem to fly by these days. I’m trying to savor every moment.

My baby boy is growing up so fast!

I hope that you enjoy today’s workout. Let me know what you think in the comments below. I am really trying to stick to a filming schedule so I can keep bringing you new workouts. Of course, any time there isn’t a new workout you still have over 700 free workouts to choose from on this site!

Thanks for working out with me today. See you soon,

Melissa

Beginner Stretch: Seated and Standing Stretches for Flexibility

Hi Everyone!

Today’s video is a Beginner Stretching for increased flexibility. This routine combines seated and standing stretches. The only equipment you need is a chair. This is a simple stretching program that will promote health and flexibility.

During any flexibility program you should feel a stretching sensation in the targeted muscles. You may be uncomfortable at times. Stretching shouldn’t hurt. One of the main goals of stretching is injury prevention. Move slowly in your stretches. Do not bounce.

In this video I hold each stretch for 30-seconds. You can extend the amount of time you spend in the stretch to 60-seconds as you become familiar with each exercise. This routine utilizes several single side stretches, because it helps decrease the chance of compensatory movement patterns. When you stretch both sides of the body, often your stronger side (we all have one) will dominate the exercise. We want to target each muscle group as efficiently as possible.

I included a photo tutorial with exercise descriptions below. I encourage you to watch the video for further description of each exercise.

Stay tuned, we have new workouts headed your way!

See you soon,

Melissa

Forward Fold. Primary Focus: Keep your back flat and hips reaching backward. You should feel a stretch in the back of the legs. Only go as far as you can while keeping your back flat.

Staggered Forward Fold: Keep your back flat. Form is the same as for the Forward Fold, with the exception of foot placement.

Quad Stretch: Focus on stretching the hip flexors and the front of the thigh. Keep the hips tucked toward your rib cage to maximize the stretch. Avoid compensatory movements.

IT/Hip Stretch (Modified Pigeon Pose): Keep your back flat and lean forward slightly to intensify the stretch. Keep your foot flexed, and do not push directly on your knee.

Shoulder Squeeze. Squeeze your shoulders together toward your spine. This stretches the front of the shoulders, while strengthening your back. This exercise helps counteract the postural pitfalls of spending time at a desk/computer.

Eagle Arms: Shoulder/Back stretch. Be sure to repeat this stretch on both sides. Avoid lifting the shoulders toward your ears.

Stretch the opposite arm by changing which elbow is on top.

Side Stretch. Shoulders stay stacked as you lean to the side. Feel the stretch on the outside of your abdomen as you create length in your midsection.

Seated Camel Stretch: Focus on lengthening the front of the abdomen, and lifting from the low back as you stretch back. Simultaneously lift your heart toward the ceiling.

Total Body Sculpting Home Workout

Hi Everyone!

I have a great workout combo for you today. I posted two videos below. You can choose to do one, or combine them together. Both workout use dumbbells. If you don’t have weights at home you can use something from around the house to add resistance to your workout, or you can do the exercises with bodyweight.

Dumbbells can be a great addition to your home workouts. Adding weight changes the challenge of the workout. It is great for your body to use multiple training techniques. Yesterday we did a bodyweight workout, today we add some resistance.

Workout 1: The first workout takes only 10-Minutes and is a low impact workout for your Arms, Abs & Legs. Grab a chair, and some dumbbells and you are ready to go.

Workout 2: The second workout video uses dumbbells interspersed with a 5-Minute Cardio HIIT fat burn burst. The exercises in both workouts combined will give you a Total Body Sculpting Workout combination to strengthen and shape everything!

I hope you enjoy today’s workouts and find them challenging. Let me know in the comments below, or tag me in your social media posts.

One year ago. 37-weeks pregnant.

Now.

So much change has occurred over the past year. It’s hard to believe that my baby will turn one next month.

Life is very different now. I thank you for sticking with me through this journey.

I am filming new workouts today. I will get them edited and posted as soon as possible.

As always, push yourself, focus on form and let me know if you have any questions. Don’t be afraid to modify the workout. Always listen to your body.

See you soon,

15-Minute Per Round: Full Body HIIT: No Equipment Workout

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today’s workout will take 15-Minutes per round. You don’t need any equipment to complete this routine. All you need is some space, and some water to stay hydrated.

This workout utilizes compound movements to maximize your workout in a short period of time. If you can only fit in one round today that’s okay. If you have more time repeat it! You can also pair it with cardio of your choice. 1-2 rounds of this workout + 30-minutes of cardio will be a very effective and challenging workout combo.

When it comes to fitness consistency is key. That means you need to find a realistic amount of time to spend on your workout. What do I mean by a realistic amount of time? For me that means between 15-60 minutes of exercise per day. Ideally it’s closer to 30-45 minutes, but it depends on the day. I would rather get in a short workout than no workout.

Depending on your schedule what you can get in will vary. Remember, staying consistent is more important than having just one long workout per week. Get yourself moving, schedule time with yourself and make it happen. Once it’s a routine part of your day it’s easier to stick to the program.

My workouts and filming schedule have been sporadic lately. My son is 11 months old, and it seems like he gets another tooth each week. It’s making his sleep schedule much trickier.

My sister in law is going to be watching my son 1X per week so I can get some filming and blogging done. I understand the difficulty of staying consistent. I am living it right now. Even when I miss a day I keep going. I also incorporate some exercises into my playtime with my son. He thinks I turn into a human jungle gym when I am doing floor exercises, but I consider it bonus resistance training.

Up and Coming Workouts: I have recruited some of my running buddies to do a runner/athlete specific workout series. My nephew will also be joining me for some kid-friendly workouts. I have HIIT workouts written, and a beginner stretch video to film.

I Need Your Opinion: Would you like to see workout tutorial videos on days that I can’t film a full workout? It would be me demonstrating exercises/form and recommending a set number of reps or time for each exercise. Feedback I have received in the past told me that people prefer real time, full length workouts. Would you like to see a combo of both? Would you use tutorial videos, or would you choose an alternate full length workout video instead?

I hope you enjoy today’s workout and find it challenging. Let me know in the comments below, or tag me in your social media posts.

Why I Have More Pride in My Slowest Half Marathon than my Fastest

Standard

Note: For this week’s workout schedule Click HERE

A few weeks ago I ran in the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. I ran it almost 15-minutes slower than my Half Marathon best. Despite a significantly slower time I have more pride in completing this race, than I have in any other run.

Why? I averaged a pace about 1 minute and 10 seconds slower/mile than I normally do in the Half Marathon. Why in the world would this race make me happier than the races where I performed better and ran faster? The answer: This was physically and mentally the hardest race I have ever run, and I finished it. literally fell down during the race, and got back up. I had scraped knees and elbows, and had the perfect excuse to quit, but I stood up and kept running. I fought myself mentally when I wanted to walk, and chose to keep running. Even when I knew there was no way I could do my best (as measured by past performance) I chose to keep going anyway.

Preparing for this race and running in it showed me the importance of determination and perseverance. I knew that training for this race was going to be challenging, because it was my first postpartum race. Training with an infant is not easy. Stroller runs add a whole new dimension to workouts. A few people have told me they think running with a stroller is an advantage. Let me assure you, it is not. It’s like running with weights. Especially uphill. Where I live everything is uphill.

Two months before race day: I got sick and couldn’t run for a week. Then my baby got sick, and I couldn’t run for another week. Then my husband got sick, which got the baby sick and me sick, and before I knew it I had done only two runs over the course of an entire month. I started to get nervous, but I still had a month until my race. I knew that setting a new PR (Personal Record) probably wasn’t going to happen at this point, but I knew I still had enough time to be prepared for the race.

One month before race day: During a run I noticed an ache on the outside of my knee. It started around mile 3, but I was only going for 4 miles so I finished my run. Once I stopped, I realized that it really hurt. I limped to my car without bending my knee. I took a few days off, but the same thing happened about 4-miles into my next run. It was IT Band syndrome.

The best cure for ITB syndrome is rest. So I took another full week off of running. I felt fantastic when I headed over to the track for a nice flat workout to test out my knee. I didn’t even make it one lap before the pain stopped me. I took off another week (we are currently at 6 weeks of little to no running for those of you keeping count). I also focused on stretching and got new running shoes.

The decision: My husband kept asking me what I was going to do about the race. I did not want to quit. I was running to raise money for Love146 to prevent human trafficking, and quitting because my knee hurt felt shameful in light of what those children faced every day. At this point I was literally terrified to run. I did not think I would be able to finish the race.

The week of the race: I tried a one mile run, and felt my knee bothering me. I stopped before it turned into pain, and decided to see a chiropractor. I saw her twice the week of the race. I still feared that I wasn’t going to make it through the race, but I decided to try anyway. Even if I had to stop, I was going to show up and do my best. If I got a DNF (Did Not Finish) at least I would know I went out and tried.

Race Day: My sister came down to the race with us to take care of the baby. Jesse ran in the Marathon relay with his friends.  I waited in the race corral by myself to start. I had friends running in the race, but I knew that if I had to stop or felt like I was slowing their pace down that would be mentally harder on me. I chose to run by myself (if you can say running with over 13,000 people is running alone).

I was hyper aware of my knee, but overall it felt okay during the race. I walked through all of the hydration stations so I could drink some gatorade. Usually I only have a few sips of water while running and most of it slops out of the cup and onto my face, but I am still nursing my son so I needed to stay hydrated. As soon as I finished my fluids I was back to running.

At mile 10 I started to struggle mentally. I really wanted to walk, but I was so close to the end that I refused to give up. I felt myself slowing down. I felt like there was a cartoon devil whispering in one ear telling me to stop, and an angel whispering in the other ear that I was able to keep going.

About a quarter mile from the finish line I tripped in a pothole. I face planted, and slid on my arms and knees for several feet. Someone who worked for the race ran over to me and asked if I needed a medic, but I said no, hopped back up and kept running. I had a bloody knee, and scrapes to both knees/elbows, but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

I crossed the finish line, and as soon as I stopped running all of the pain in my left knee hit me. I could barely bend it, and walking felt like torture. I wanted to find my sister, and my baby, and watch Jesse finish his race. A race coordinator saw that I could barely walk and escorted me to the medic tent. They saran wrapped a bag of ice to my knee.

Eventually I found my sister and my son, and we headed back to the car to wait for Jesse. His relay team finished 5th out of over 1000 entries. He ran the final leg, so he got to cross the finish line.

Limping post-race.

I often say that achieving your goals (be they fitness or otherwise) is not the result of motivation. It is the result of determination. It happens when you choose to keep going even when things get hard. Success isn’t only about what you achieve, it’s about persevering with your journey. I worked harder, struggled more, and pushed through. Even if the race had ended with a DNF, I knew I would be happier than settling for Did Not Try.

I finished!

Weekly Workout Schedule: 6 Home Workouts You Can Do For Free

Standard

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to this week’s workout schedule! This week we have 6-workouts on the agenda. Day 7 is reserved for resting and recovering. You can modify the workout schedule to fit your own needs, and based on your body’s response.

Most of the workouts don’t use any equipment. In the workouts with dumbbells you can use water bottles or something else from around the house to add in some resistance to your workout. You can also choose to use body weight only. It is good for your body to mix up the challenge. I also encourage you to complete the yoga workout, even if yoga isn’t your cup of tea. I read your comments here and on my Facebook page, so I know a lot of people skip yoga day. Flexibility is an important part of overall health and wellness. It will benefit you by ensuring full range of motion during your workouts, preventing injury, and aiding in muscle recovery.

Ways to Modify the Workout Schedule:

Add in another rest day. If you have major soreness or muscle fatigue (or even just an insanely hectic schedule!) you can add in another rest day. The workout list will still be here. One of the best things about home workouts is that you can modify them to your own pace/schedule. Having a workout schedule that fits into your life/routine is one of the most important ways to building consistency with your workouts.

Select how many times to repeat the workouts: Most of the workouts can be repeated up to 3X. Listen to your body. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. Sometimes I go through the workouts once, other times I repeat them 3X.

Do the workout on it’s own or add cardio: You can add in 30-minutes cardio of choice (running, walking, jump rope, cycling, swimming, etc) to any workout. I typically keep my total workout time between 30-60 minutes, including the daily workout and cardio.

I posted the workouts two different ways below. Under the title “Workout Links with Breakdown” you will find a link to my original blog post with the full workout breakdown/exercise list.

I say this all the time because it’s worth repeating: Determination is greater than Motivation. Consistency is not the result of being motivated all the time. It’s the result of making the choice to get in your workouts even when you don’t feel motivated.

Thank you for working out with me! Have fun with today’s workout! Let me know how you feel and what you think. Comment and let me know if you are using the links I posted with the full workout breakdown, or if you go straight to the video. I posted both options below, but I want to know what you find most efficient and helpful.

Hi Everyone!

I have two workouts for you today. Today we are focusing on Core and Lower Body. You can choose to pair the workouts together, or you can do them separately.

Core Workout: The first workout only takes 5-Minutes Per Round. It is a quick challenging routine that will work your core muscles from every angle. You don’t need any equipment, and you can repeat it up to 5X. Note: You do not have to repeat it 5X. I will be going through this 2X today. You can decide how many times you want to go through it based on how you feel, and if you are pairing it with any other workouts.

Lower Body Workout: The second workout only takes 10-Minutes Per Round and is focused on the lower body. You can use dumbbells or a barbell. If you don’t have equipment you can grab a water jug or something around the house to use for added resistance. You can also choose to do the exercises with body weight only. Challenge yourself to focus on great form during each exercise. Form really does make a difference. Improper form typically results in incorrect muscle activation. For the best results, you want to utilize the targeted muscles.

Recently I have written about my recovery from IT Band Syndrome. I need to focus on re-strengthening my lower body, while also focusing on flexibility. I like today’s workout combination because a strong core will help maintain hip alignment and posture. This in turn will assist with more effective lower body workouts.

When I am back to running I am going to focus on re-building my speed. I haven’t done a 5K race in a long time. I was training for a faster 5K when I found out I was pregnant, and I had to ease back on workout intensity. Maverick is now 10-Months old, and already crawls at supersonic speeds so I am going to need to up the workout ante just to keep up with him. I have a feeling he is going to be walking and running before I know it.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout combination. I love seeing your feedback. I have received so many wonderful comments and success stories from people who have used my workouts. I can’t express how much it means to me to hear from you.

Thank you for working out with me! Have fun with today’s workout! Let me know how you feel and what you think.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome Back! It’s workout time again!

Today’s workout will take only 15-minutes per round. You don’t need any equipment to complete this workout program. Push yourself to get in as many reps as possible during each interval. Focus on maintaining good form, and moving through the full range of motion for each exercise.

Weight Loss Challenge: For those of you with weight loss goals: My new DietBet Challenge started on Wednesday May 17th. It’s not too late to join! If you want a chance to win money for losing weight sign up for the challenge. Everyone who loses 4% of their body weight over the course of 4 weeks will win a portion of the jackpot. You can sign up at www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness

Please remember, fueling your body with highly nutritious foods will help you feel better and get results faster. Make sure that you are well hydrated. Your body will function best when you are eating a colorful diet with plenty of vegetables. The more colors on your plate the more nutritional variety you are consuming.

Spinach! Yum!

Lately my diet has been very carbohydrate heavy. I have been eating a lot of convienent foods (cereal, sandwiches, etc). I’m a big fan of complex carbs, but I also want to make sure that I am getting in enough vitamins and protein.

Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken, Strawberries, Raspberries, Cashews and Feta.

Yesterday I went out to eat with my sister and a friend, and they had a beautiful Spinach Salad on the menu. It tasted so good! At the start of the year I eliminated cheese from my diet (I absolutely love it, but I am lactose intolerant), but I did have some feta on this salad. It didn’t seem to bother my stomach at all. Note: I am not a fan of dressing. I always order it on the side or skip it entirely. I prefer a very light drizzle if I use it at all.

With your diet, the most important thing is figuring out what works for your body. Everyone is different. Focus on eating healthy portion sizes, and remembering that food is fuel. Calories=Energy. If you cut that calorie reserve down too low your body needs to figure out how to conserve energy. This will lead to a sluggish metabolism. If you have a surplus of calories your body will store that energy for a rainy day. Body fat is stored energy. Find the balance of giving your body what it needs to function best.

Have fun with today’s workout! Let me know how you feel and what you think!

15-Minute Total Body-No Equipment Bodyweight Workout

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time! Let’s start the week strong!

Today’s workout is a Total Body, No Equipment Workout. All you need is a little bit of space. I use an interval timer, but you can always follow along with the workout video if you don’t have a timer.

Cardio bursts are incorporated throughout the workout for an added endurance challenge and fat burn. I chose to do High Knees, but you can select your preferred cardio.

Some great cardio options include: Burpees, Jump Rope, Mountain Climbers, Russian, Kicks, Lunge Jumps or any combination of these exercises. The goal is to keep your heart rate up during the cardio bursts. Pick an option that will be challenging.

I did this workout with my Jogging Class as one of their cross training days. This routine is a full body workout, that is aimed at decreasing muscular imbalances in the body while improving endurance. One round will take 15-minutes. You can repeat it for a longer/more intense workout. During our class we did this routine 2X, after a jogging warm-up.

Mountain Climbers

I am still healing from IT Band Syndrome. It has been giving me issues again since my Half Marathon. I have been walking, and trying to let it rest, but it’s a tricky injury that just wants to stick around. I watched Jesse do a track workout the other day and I was jealous. Let that sink in for a minute. I was jealous of a track workout.

Normally I despise track workouts. I trick myself into thinking it’s going to be a fun challenge. I love what they do (improve your speed and provide a great fat burn). That said, they always hurt! No matter how fast you are or how much you improve, when you get in a good track workout you are really pushing your body. Plus, doing the same loop over and over again gets repetitive and boring. Having an injury makes me realize how much of our physical capabilities we are able to take for granted on any given day. I may hate track workouts while I am doing them, but I am lucky to have the physical ability to run. Don’t take your physical fitness for granted. You earn it with every workout you do. You protect your physical fitness by resting, stretching, and nurturing your body with food and water.

I will continue to walk instead of run, but I will be able to run again soon. I might even be able to trick myself into loving my next track workout when I can finally do one again!

Hi Everyone!

Are you ready for this week’s workout schedule? I have posted a full week of workouts below. All of the exercises can be done at home with little or no equipment.

Equipment: Jump Rope, Chair, Dumbbells. If you don’t have equipment you can modify. For jump rope you can do rope less jumping. For dumbbells you can use something around the house to add some resistance or complete the exercises with bodyweight.

Repeat: Each workout can be completed between 1-3X. You can do the workouts on their own, or pair them with some cardio. You should have 1-2 full rest days each week to allow your body to recover. Rest/recovery days help your level of fitness progress more quickly. I encourage you not to skip the yoga day (yes I am talking to you! I know you are thinking about skipping the yoga day.) Many people say yoga just isn’t their thing. That said, it is fantastic for your body, and will help you maintain flexibility, heal/recover more quickly, and prevent injury. Plus, my cats both make a guest appearance in my yoga video.

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time again! Don’t you just love the feeling you get after a good workout? It’s time to earn that sense of accomplishment. On the days when you don’t feel like working out (but you do anyway) that sense of accomplishment is even higher.

Motivation is a nice bonus, but let’s face it, you are not going to be motivated every single day. Improving your health and fitness level requires consistency. People who succeed in achieving their goals don’t do so because they are insanely motivated (although there are a few special people who are!) People who succeed do so because they are determined and consistent.

At one point or another we all think to ourselves how the heck do I stay motivated? The truth is that your motivation will ebb and flow. There are days when working out is the very last thing I want to do. On the other hand, since having my son, uninterrupted workout time is a luxury. There are days when getting in my workout is the thing I want to accomplish most during the day.

So what do we do? On the days that we are feeling super motivated we use that to our advantage. Go into your workout like the Superwoman (or Superman!) that you are and crush it. On the days that we have zero motivation we ignore it. I use the 5-minute rule. Start my workout. If I want to quit after 5-minutes I do it. Side note: I have never quit after 5 minutes. Once I am doing it I already start to feel better and motivation becomes a non-issue. Determination and consistency are more important than motivation.

Today’s workout: Today’s routine is a 20-Minute per round HIIT and Fat Burn Lower Body Challenge. It’s a great workout for your entire body even though it has a lower body focus. Do not sacrifice form for speed, but I do want you to challenge yourself to get in as many quality reps as you can during each interval.

For those of you with weight loss goals: My new DietBet Challenge starts on Wednesday May 17th. If you want a chance to win money for losing weight sign up for the challenge. Cardio HIIT 15 Minute Body Weight Fat Burn: Home Workout

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to today’s workout! Today’s exercise program is a 15-Minute Per Round Cardio HIIT Routine. This is a full body, fat burning workout that will help you maintain lean muscle, boost your metabolism, and give you a fantastic workout in a short amount of time.

You can go through this workout once, or repeat it if you want a higher level of intensity. Always focus on maintaining good form. During HIIT, it is important to push yourself for maximum repetitions with good form. When you sacrifice form  you may not be recruiting the appropriate muscles that we are targeting. Of course, you can always modify the workout to suit your needs. I posted a workout tutorial, and the full length workout video below. If you aren’t sure what the exercises are be sure to watch the video before starting.

Plie Jump: Knees Stay Open, Back/Chest Stay Lifted. Land Toe to Heel.

Every persons body is different. There is no shame in modifying an exercise or program to suit your own needs. Work at your own level and build from there. The great thing about HIIT is that it allows you to work at your own pace. As your fitness level increases, you will find that you are able to get in more reps in the same amount of time. I encourage you to keep track of your reps. It is a great way to track your progress and see improvements in a non-scale victory.

Often people become fixated on the number on the scale, or a specific body fat percentage, but quantifying how much gravitational force is working on your body doesn’t tell you how strong you are or how much endurance you have. It is important to focus on non-scale related improvements, even if you have a weight loss goal.

For those of you with weight loss goals: My new DietBet Challenge starts on Wednesday May 17th. If you want a chance to win money for losing weight sign up for the challenge. Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Day 2 of this week’s workout schedule! If you missed Day one don’t worry! You can find it right HERE. Yesterday we had a 16-Minute Per Round Total Body HIIT Workout. Today we have a quick Legs & Core Workout.

One round of today’s workout will take only 12-Minutes per round. I use a dumbbell for a couple of exercises in this workout. If you don’t have equipment just grab something from around the house to add some resistance, or do the exercises with body weight. Focus on using good form and getting in your maximum number of reps during each interval. You can modify the workout as needed. As long as you are challenging yourself you are getting in a good workout. If it feels easy that’s a sign that it’s time to increase the intensity.

Tomorrow’s workout is a Cardio HIIT Routine. You can find it here (if you just can’t wait!): Cardio HIIT (Full Length).

I am still taking it easy after my Half Marathon on Sunday. I mentioned on Instagram/Facebook that I took a tumble during the race- darned potholes!– and my knees and elbows are pretty sore from the impact. Gentle stretching and foam rolling are my focus right now. Part of living a healthy lifestyle is resting when you need too. My knees are so sore I didn’t even want to go walking today! They are bruised and I have a few scrapes, but I can tell that I am already on the mend.

See you soon with some new workout videos & blog posts. If you have any questions you want to see me answer please let me know in the comments below.

16-Minute Full Body HIIT: Home Workout & Fat Burn

HI Everyone!

It’s workout time again! Today’s workout will take 16-Minutes per round. This is a fantastic full body workout.

I went through this routine for time (16 rounds of 10/50-10 seconds rest, 50 seconds Max Reps). You can also choose to go through this workout for repetitions. If you’re feeling extra peppy I recommend doing a round timed, and a round for reps. Each workout technique will train your body differently, and you might be surprised at the way the challenge changes.

Don’t be afraid to modify if you need to. Where there is a will there’s a way. As long as the workout is challenging to you it is helping you become stronger. There is never any shame in modifying an exercise so that it is right for your current level of fitness.

Decline Pushup to Split Squat: Part 1

During this workout I used a chair, and two dumbbells. My dumbbells are 20-lbs each, but you can choose whatever weight is most appropriate for you. You can to select a weight that challenges you, but you can maintain good form throughout each exercise. Higher weights will help build lean muscle and burn fat due to the added resistance and challenge to your body.

I ran my Half Marathon on Sunday. I am working on an update post (as well as this week’s schedule!) I was running for a cause, if you would like to donate to help rescue and protect children from human trafficking please go to Love146.

Have fun with today’s workout!

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are ready for a fresh week of workouts! This week’s workout schedule includes 6 workout days and one rest day. I encourage you to set yourself a goal number of workouts that you want to complete this week. Mark them down on a calendar as you go so you can see your progress. Having a visual aid for your workout days will help you stay on track and achieve your goals.

As always, listen to your body and adjust the workouts as needed. Focus on maintaining good form during each exercise. Push yourself, but don’t sacrifice form.

My first Half Marathon. I completed it in 1:46.

My personal workout schedule is going to be a little bit different this week. This is the final countdown to my Half Marathon. My race is this weekend. During my Half Marathon I am fundraising for Love146 to help prevent human trafficking of children. This is such an important cause. If you are able to make a donation every dollar helps! You can do so here: Love 146 Fundraiser. Your donation helps rescue children from slavery, and provide services and support to the children who are rescued.

I am filming new workouts this week and doing some light runs to make sure I am not too tired for my race on Sunday. This is the first time I am going into a Half Marathon feeling really worried. Although my IT band hasn’t been giving me any trouble I haven’t done any long runs at all. My training and even my normal running schedule has been minimal so my goal is just to get through the race. I have no time or speed goal. I just want to make it through with no discomfort or pain in my IT Band (or anywhere else!)

Next week I will be back to working out with you and following the schedule with you.

Have fun with the workout schedule! Let me know what your goal is, and if you enjoy the workouts!

Melissa

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to a new week of workouts! For this week I have posted 6-workout videos. That means there are 6-workouts and one rest day. One of the workouts is a stretching day. Remember, rest and recovery helps your body stay healthy and make improvements in your strength and level of fitness.

Don’t be afraid to modify the schedule if you need too. Listen to your body. A huge part of creating a healthy lifestyle is learning what your body responds best too. Focus on form during each exercise. If you need rest take it. Exercise should improve your health and overall fitness. If you see signs of overtraining, ease back, rest, and return when you are ready.

I have been resting and recovering from a nasty bout of IT Band Syndrome. I was finally able to run without pain two days ago, and had another successful run today. I was getting very nervous for my Half Marathon. The race is only two weeks away, and I have been having dreams that I am late to the race and forgot to pick up my race packet.

I am running this race to raise money for a cause, so I really didn’t want to get sidelined with an injury. I will have to test out some longer run days, and be very careful to make sure I am in good shape on race day. At this point I know that I have missed a lot of training so it’s going to be a matter of just making it through the race. I ordered new pants that are supposed to provide the same support as kinesiotape. They should be arriving on Tuesday.

During my Half Marathon I am fundraising for Love146 to help prevent human trafficking of children. It’s very important to me to be able to run this race, because it is such an important cause. If you are able to make a donation every dollar helps! You can do so here: Love 146 Fundraiser. Your donation helps rescue children from slavery, and provide services and support to the children who are rescued. Donations are tax deductible.

My niece & nephew doing a Hill Sprint!

I am planning on filming new workouts this week. I can’t wait to get back into my routine & share new content with you all! I have been teaching my jogging class one cross training workout per week, so I have a lot of new routines to share here.

Have fun with the workout schedule!

Melissa

Hi Everyone!

It is a brand new week, and I have a new workout schedule for you! This schedule includes five workout days, one stretch day, and one rest day.

Any of the workouts below can be repeated and/or paired with up to 30-minutes of Cardio. For best results aim for 30-60 minutes of total workout time per day. Total workout time includes the daily workout and any cardio. You do not have to do all of the workouts below each day. Just choose one workout. They are listed as Day 1-6. If you want to combine any of the workouts you can.

Equipment: I use dumbbells and a jump rope in a couple of the videos below. You can do rope-less jumping. If you don’t have dumbbells:  Use something from around the house, or body weight if you don’t have any equipment. If plyometric exercises are too intense for you modify to do a low impact variation (IE Squat with Glute Squeeze can be substituted for a Jump Squat).

Remember: There is always a way to modify or substitute an alternate exercise. If you need suggestions for an exercise leave a comment below.

I have been MIA from workouts due to IT Band syndrome. Today will be my first trial run day. I am going to do a gentle warm-up and try an easy run. My Half Marathon is less than 3 weeks away, and I have been unable to run. For the next few weeks I am planning on just focusing on easy runs-as long as my IT Band cooperates.

Walking with Maverick. Taking it easy while my IT Band heals.

I hope you enjoy this week’s workout schedule! Let me know what you think! I feel terrible that I haven’t been able to film any new workouts lately. I miss doing it! I can’t wait to be back to 100%, and get this hurdle cleared. I will check in with everyone on Instagram & Facebook to let you know how the run goes. Hopefully it is all good news, and my knee feels great! Wish me luck!

Hi Everyone!

Are you ready for a quick workout? Today’s workout is focused on the lower body. Grab some dumbbells today to add resistance to your workout. If you don’t have dumbbells you can do the exercises with body weight, or grab something from around your house to add resistance.

This workout utilizes multiple exercises to shape and sculpt your lower body. Focus on form and using the full range of motion for each exercise.

For this workout I went for Reps instead of time. You can choose to do this routine for time if you prefer, but it is good to mix up your workouts and challenge your body in a different way. Don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone.

I am still resting, stretching and foam rolling to make sure my IT Band is in tip top shape and I can return to working out. I did go for a 40-minute walk yesterday and had no pain. Foam rolling has also become less painful. When I first started foam rolling my left IT Band it felt like being punched in a bruise. Now it is relatively comfortable, so I think I have eased out the tightness. My Half Marathon is just three weeks away. I went from having a time goal, to just wanting to make it through the race injury free. I am giving it a full week off before I attempt to run, and I am going to start with light running on a flat surface. Maverick and I will be visiting the track on Monday.

I am focusing on practicing what I preach: Exercise should be something good for you. When you are injured exercising before you are ready doesn’t make you healthier or stronger, it can injure you further. It is better to wait, heal, and resume your exercise. I am not a fan of the waiting, but I know that in the long run my body will thank me for it.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout! Let me know what you think!
