Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Day 3 of my Fit & Healthy New Year & DietBet Workouts!

The Challenge started Sunday, but it isn’t to late to sign up: www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness. There is currently over $6000 in the Jackpot and the Winners (everyone who achieves their weight loss goal) get to split the money!

You can find the first workout from this challenge here: Fit & Healthy DietBet Challenge: Day 1: 30-Minute Full Body Home Workout & Fat Burn and workout #2 here: Core, Glutes & Cardio Fat Burn-No Equipment Workouts.

Today’s workout utilizes primarily low impact movements, with the exception of jump rope. To make this routine all low impact you can substitute High Knees Marching for the Jump Rope. Also, if you don’t have a jump rope, high knees, burpees or another cardio option can be substituted.

Remember, consistency is key to your results. Pair these workouts with a healthy diet and you will see changes in your physique, strength and level of fitness.

This workout takes 21-Minutes per round. Aim to get in 30-60 Minutes of exercise today. This round can be completed up to 3X, or you can pair it with cardio of choice. Running, walking, jump rope, etc. I also posted a 10-Minute Per Round Jump Rope workout video below that you can alternate in between rounds to increase the burn.

Have fun & don’t be afraid to challenge yourself! I hope you’re enjoying the challenge so far! Feel free to tag in in your photos along the way! You can find me on Instagram & Twitter: @BenderFitness and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MelissaBenderFitness

See you soon with the next workout!

We have had guests staying with us, and running has been the most efficient way to get in my workouts. Planning to get back to filming this week!

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Day 2 of my Fit & Healthy New Year & DietBet Workouts! The Challenge started yesterday, but it isn’t to late to sign up: www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness. You can find the first workout from this challenge here: Fit & Healthy DietBet Challenge: Day 1: 30-Minute Full Body Home Workout & Fat Burn.

Today we have two workouts on our agenda. Both workout videos and breakdowns are below. The first workout is a 20-Minute Low Impact Workout for the Core & Glutes. Don’t let the words Low Impact fool you into thinking it isn’t effective! This workout is designed to create core strength through the front, sides (love handles), and back of your abdomen. This will help align your pelvis, improve your posture, and improve the aesthetics of your midsection.

The second workout is a 10-Minute Intense Cardio HIIT Fat Burn Workout. Go for max reps. The workout is short, but tough, and the goal is to really maximize your fat burn by pushing through the workout.

Our goal is to workout between 30-60 Minutes today. You can do 1 Round of Each Workout for a total 30-Minute Workout, or Repeat each workout 2X for 60-Minutes. You can also choose to do 1 Round of each workout and do 30-Minutes cardio of choice (running, biking, swimming, etc) to hit your 60-Minutes. Combining strengthening and cardio burn moves will help maximize your results and increase your fat burn during this challenge.

Remember to pair your workouts with healthy food choices. Don’t use them as an excuse to make unhealthy choices with your meals!

Have fun today!

Melissa

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Day 1 of my Fit & Healthy New Year & DietBet Challenge Workouts! One round of today’s workout takes 30-Minutes. In the video below I completed this workout for time (intervals), but I also included the breakdown to complete the workout for reps.

You can choose either variation, or complete a round of each to really challenge your body in two different styles of training. In this workout I am using 15-lb dumbbells. If you don’t have any weights you can complete the exercises with body weight only. If you do have weights I recommend using them because it will help boost your metabolism & burn, while increasing the challenge of each exercise.

During this challenge I encourage you to workout between 30-60 Minutes per day. You can do one round of this workout and 30-Minutes cardio of choice, or do two rounds of this workout for a total workout time of 60-Minutes.

If you haven’t signed up for the weight loss challenge yet you can do so here: www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness for a chance to win money & prizes by placing a bet on your ability to lose 4% of your body weight in 4-weeks. It’s a great motivator!

Have fun with today’s workout & make sure you are supporting it with healthy food choices. For some ideas check out: DietBet Sample Meal Plan & Bender Bikini Competition Diet.

Plyometric HIIT Fat Burning Body Sculpt: 15 Minutes Per Round Home Workout

Good Morning Everyone!

I hope you’re ready for a tough workout! My new DietBet Challenge officially starts tomorrow, but early weigh in has started! If one of your goals is weight loss & you want to know more about the challenge you can read about it here: Fit & Healthy 2016: Challenge. I will be posting this week’s workout schedule to go along with the challenge tonight so it will be ready for the early birds tomorrow.

Today’s workout is a plyometric interval workout that will get you sweating and get your heart rate up. When I filmed this workout I burned 179 Calories during the 15-Minute Workout. That averages to almost 12-calories per minute, which is higher than most people get during running!

10933841_872203462824415_5100218514266504087_n

It’s important to remember, that calorie burn does vary from person to person. During this workout I wore a heart rate monitor so it was very precise, but the burn will fluctuate based on how intensely you push, your weight and height. I am 5’5″ tall, so I am average height, and that should help you get a good estimate if you don’t have your own heart rate monitor.

For Christmas I got the FitBit Surge Smartwatch, which monitors heart rate throughout the day and during workouts, tracks runs and indoor workouts, and has a built in pedometer for steps. I still have some components to try out, but I will write a review for anyone who is curious.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout! If you want to join the DietBet Challenge you can sign up here: www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness. The game officially starts tomorrow, but you can join up until January 16th. The earlier you start, the easier it is to hit your goal! I hope to see you there!

Hi Everyone!

I love starting out the New Year with a challenge! It may be a little bit cliché, but people have great motivation at the start of the year & you should take advantage of that! There are naysayers that claim no one achieves their New Year’s Resolutions, but that isn’t true! You can achieve anything you set your mind to this year. You just have to do it with determination & consistency.

My first challenge of the year is a DietBet Weight Loss Challenge. You can sign up here: www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness.

What you Need to Know: The challenge is to lose 4% of your body weight (as long as that keeps you in a healthy BMI!) over the course of 30 days. How do you figure out how much 4% is? Multiple your current weight by .04 and that is your weight loss goal. For a 150 pound person that is 6 pounds, for a 200 pound person that is 8 pounds.

To join the game there is a $30 investment (my workouts, as always, will continue to be free, but research has shown that people are more committed to achieving their weightless goals when money is involved!) If you achieve your goals you get your money back, plus split the jackpot! Everyone’s $30 is put in a jackpot and split by all players who achieve their goal.

What do you win?
If you achieve your goal you win money! At a minimum you get your $30 investment back, plus you split the pot with the other winners. I will also be adding some surprise prizes throughout the game! One of the Bonus Prize winner’s goes to whoever invites the most friends to the game, so if you know anyone else with a weight loss goal this year invite them to join!

Some fun facts about DietBet:
96% of players who DietBet lose weight, and the average loss is 6.3 lbs.
Dietbetting is a fun social media game, and you are welcome to join if you are over 18.
As of July 1st, players have lost over 1.3 million pounds by competing in DietBet games.

My DietBet will run from Sunday January 3rd-January 31st. Workouts, and healthy eating tips will be posted in the game and here on my blog.  Are you going to join me?

Dave’s Results from my first DietBet Challenge
12 pounds lost.
The signs are a way to prevent cheating in the game.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s success! If you have questions about the game let me know! I will be posing more diet samples & ideas in the game, and I will be sharing all of the workouts here on my blog.

Have fun & good luck!
Melissa

26 Minute HIIT: Full Body Cardio Burn Workout-No Equipment

Hi Everyone!

One Round of today’s workout takes 26-Minutes. In the video I claim that it’s only 24-Rounds, but don’t listen to me. I mis-labeled my workout list and wrote one number twice, which threw off my count. So if you are setting your own interval timer, you can set it for 26 Rounds of 10/50.

In today’s workout I increased the length of the cardio bursts from 30 to 50 seconds. Be sure to push during each interval (cardio and strength moves!) I am pacing myself and not going full out, because I don’t want to over-do it. I did monitor my heart rate, and it stayed in a low range (around 130 BPM) so I know I can definitely push harder than that in the future.

It was my first day back to working out after all of the holiday madness. We have house guests, have been eating out every day, and eating Christmas leftovers. Between the food and missed workouts I am not feeling my best. I was completely over the first trimester nausea and fatigue, however, they have both come back! I am bloating dramatically from AM to PM. Pregnancy hormones are partially to blame, but so are poor food choices. I am re-focusing on feeding myself (and baby Bender!) healthy food items & getting back to working out consistently. I have been doing exercises each day, but my new goal is to get in at least the recommended 30-Minutes of exercise per day.

I hope you enjoy the new workout!

30-Minute Workout: Tight Core & Round Butt Stability Ball Workout

Good Morning Everyone!

Today’s workout Combo uses a stability ball. If you don’t have a stability ball this workout is easily modified to be done without one so don’t worry! Today’s routine combines two 15 Minute HIIT workouts. If you do one round of each your total workout time will be 30-minutes. For a higher intensity burn complete each workout 2X for total workout time of 60-Minutes.

stability ball leg series

Elevated Leg series can also be done with a chair or bench if you don’t have a stability ball available.

Focus on form with each exercise and warm-up for 5-10 minutes before your workout to maximize your results and decrease your chance of injury. Remember, warm-ups should always be dynamic (moving). Cool downs can be static (staying still and stretching). You don’t want to stretch cold muscles. They aren’t ready for it yet!

I didn’t get to workout yesterday, and I can’t wait to get in a good workout tonight. My body is missing the endorphins! I notice that when I don’t workout my energy level suffers. Exercise actually gives me more energy and decreases my cravings for unhealthy foods.

I hope you enjoy today’s workouts! Don’t forget you can find me on Instagram & Twitter: @BenderFitness and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MelissaBenderFitness.

Also, we are getting closer to the start of my New DietBet Challenge! If one of your goals is weight loss it is a great motivator. You have a chance to win money by achieving your weight loss goals! The point of the game is to lose 4% of your body weight over 4 weeks. Everyone who achieves this goal is a winner & splits the jackpot at the end of the game. To start the game everyone places a bet and that money goes in the jackpot. You can sign up here: www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness.

Have fun today!

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today’s workout takes 21-Minutes Per Round. This is a full body workout, with cardio bursts in between each exercise. Push yourself to get in the maximum number of repetitions during each interval & round of cardio.

This workout can be repeated to increase the intensity. Be sure to warm-up before the workout with some dynamic movements to get your heart rate up and your blood flowing (jumping jacks, jump rope, jogging in place, leg swings). This will maximize your body’s ability to work at a high level of intensity and get the most out of your workout. It will also help prevent injury.

Jesse and I took the day off of working out to focus on a home improvement project. With major help from Jesse’s dad we put in hardwood flooring! I am completely wiped out after our hard work, so I am going to get some rest, and plan a good workout for tomorrow.

hardwood floors

BenderFitness Studio’s new floors!

I am now just over 13-Weeks Pregnant, and although I feel great, for the last two weeks I have been very fatigued. I have been taking more rest days, and sleeping more than usual. Baby Bender must be growing! I will keep posting old workouts here on the days when I don’t film, but there are new workouts from both Jesse and I headed your way. Cant’ wait to try out the new floors!

13-Week Baby Bump. Baby Bender is still doing a good job of hiding! Baby is about the size of a Peach this week.

Quick reminder: My new DietBet Challenge starts Sunday January 3rd. If one of your goals this year is weight loss, this game is a great motivator. The way it works: you place a bet that you can lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks. If you achieve your goal you are a winner. All winners split the jackpot! So you can make money for achieving your weight loss goals. In the past participants have had great results! You can sign up here: www.dietbet.com/benderfitness.

Have fun with today’s workout!
Melissa

*Disclaimer: For hosting my Diet Bet Challenge I do get a portion of the jackpot. I always want to keep this site and my workouts free because I believe that everyone has the right to be healthy. That will never change. I want to make some upgrades to the website, our camera, and help offset some of the costs of running a blog. Participating in paid opportunities helps me to do that. I will never share or promote a product that I don’t believe in and/or use personally.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas & Holiday Season! Jesse and I have one more holiday celebration to attend today, with his grandmother. Tonight I am planning on filming a new workout. I love the holidays & all of the time spent with family, but I am missing my workout routine.

We have been so blessed to have 4-days of celebrating with different parts of the family. I have not gotten in any formal workouts in those 4-days, but I snuck in some squats, legs series, and transverse ab squeezes whenever I had time.

Tonight it will be back to a more organized workout! In the mean time I have two older workouts for you. I have a quick Arms & Back Workout, and a Standing Lower Body Workout. For the first workout you need dumbbells, and a pull-up bar (if one is available). For the second workout you need a chair, bench or step: something sturdy you can step up onto.

Also, don’t forget, my DietBet Challenge starts on January 3rd. If one of your goals is to lose weight in the new year you can sign up at www.dietbet.com/BenderFitness. The way it works is: you place a bet, the goal is to lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks, all the bet money goes in the Jackpot, if you achieve your goal you are a winner and you split the jackpot. It is a great motivator. I have hosted two games in the past, and the participates had fantastic results.

I hope you enjoy today’s workouts and that you had a fabulous holiday!

Tight Stomach Toning Workout

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time and today’s workout is all about the core.

If you have problems with your wrists you can modify the workout by completing the plank on your forearm. Keeping your hand and wrist in a neutral position decreases the amount of pressure on the carpal tunnel. Another option, is utilizing stationary pushup bars or dumbbells to hold onto during your plank (as long as your wrist/hand form a straight line).

Remember, during all core exercises you want to activate your Transverse Abs. That means pull your core in strongly toward your back and hold it there as much as you can. You should still be able to breath, but this activates the muscles that run horizontally across you stomach and hold your waist in tight (like a natural corset).

I hope you all enjoy today’s workout & have a beautiful Christmas Eve! We have a family Christmas party tonight, and we hop from house to house tomorrow to visit everyone so I might not have any new workouts until this weekend. I will be posting throwback workouts every day though so be sure to check back for the workout of the day!

Have fun with today’s workout!
Melissa

Beginner: 10 reps
Intermediate: 15 reps
Advanced: 20 reps
*If the plank variations are to difficult, an alternative option is to hold a static plank. Choose a length of time that is challenging for you. As you build strength with correct form you will be able to progress to the more difficult variations.

Hi Everyone!

Today’s workout is a throwback workout! I filmed this for a 30-Day Challenge Program that I ran 2 years ago. In January I am starting another 30-Day Workout Challenge. I will also be running a new DietBet Challenge for those of you with weight loss goals. I have run two DietBet challenges in the past, and the participants had great success in losing weight during the challenge.

If you are interested in signing up for the challenge you can do so here: www.dietbet.com/benderfitness. The way the game works: you bet money on the fact that you can lose 4% of your body weight over the course of the challenge. The money from everyone who joins going into the jackpot. If you achieve your goal you are automatically a winner. All of the winners split the money in the jackpot. If every single person in the game wins you at least get your money back.

I will be providing workouts throughout the month and diet advice to help you with the challenge.

Speaking of challenges, today’s workout is a good one. It will challenge you cardiovascularly, while working & sculpting your entire body.  I got in a fantastic sweat and one round took just over 23 minutes. I repeated this workout twice, and we filmed the second time through.

I increased the length of the cardio intervals by 15 seconds to increase the cardiovascular challenge and fat burning benefits. I love jump roping (even when I step on the rope, haha). If you are interested in some of the health benefits of jumping rope check out this article: Health Benefits of Jumping Rope. If you don’t have a jump rope you can substitute High Knees, Burpees, or cardio of choice.

I hope everyone enjoys today’s challenge.

Have fun!

Working Out in the First Trimester of Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Hi Everyone!

Having a baby is an exciting time! It can also be a confusing, and scary time when you hear conflicting information on what is and is not safe for you and your baby. Well meaning people will offer you conflicting advice, and internet searches can turn up some scary results.

I have put together some Must Know information for working out in your first trimester. If you have anything to add to this list, or a question about working out in the first Trimester post it in the comments below or on my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MelissaBenderFitness.

  1. There is No Set Heart Rate you Must Stay Under During Your Workouts. For a long time, doctor’s recommended that women keep their heart rate under 140 beats per minute during exercise while pregnant. This was based on one study that was done in the 1980s. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists changed this recommendation back in 2002, yet this advice continues to be common today.

You should pay attention to your Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) when working out. If it feels to intense, it probably is. You should be able to talk during exercise, and never work out to the point where you are gasping for air or feel sick. This guideline was changed because individual heart rates are very variable, and for most athletes 140 BPM is barely a warm-up, let alone a workout. Rate of Perceived Exertion is a much more reliable and individualized method of monitoring your workout intensity.

When I run and workout, I give myself the “talk test.” Even if I am alone on the treadmill, “Are you still doing okay? Yup! You can chat so you’re in the right zone! Keep it up!” Sounds cheesy I know, but I am willing to be cheesy if it means keeping my baby safe and healthy.

run dec

Running Outside at 11.5 Weeks Pregnant. I heard Baby Bender’s Heart Beat at my doctor’s appointment the very next day. A strong 160 BPM.

2. It is Never to Late to Start a Workout Program. Previously, women were told “If you didn’t work out before you shouldn’t start while you are pregnant.” Wrong! The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women get At Least 30-Minutes of Exercise Per day. If you are brand new to exercise you should not start a high intensity program. You want to build a little bit at a time. Week one, walk 5 minutes per day. During week 2 increase that to 10 Minutes per day. Continue to add 5-minutes of exercise at a time until you are getting in at least 30-Minutes most or all days of the week. Pay attention to your RPE, and keep your exercise in the mild-moderate intensity range.

jess preg walk

Walking with my sister while she was pregnant with Dax. She didn’t exercise consistently pre-pregnancy, but her daughter & walks around the neighborhood kept her active.

3. You Can Continue Your Current Workout Program. If you have an established workout program/routine it is generally safe to continue as long as you monitor your RPE and make adjustments for your changing body & endurance levels. Athletes can work out at a higher intensity level than people who are brand new to working out, because that is what their body is used to. Higher intensity workouts are not harmful to your baby. The baby will become conditioned to your workouts. Babies whose mom’s worked out during the pregnancy handle delivery better, and show less stress through the birth process. The babies also have improved cardiovascular systems at birth! The baby is only at risk if the mom is working out at an intensity level they are not used to. If you are gasping for air, baby is probably not getting enough oxygen either. Listen to your body. If it tells you to stop, listen! If your body handles your workouts well, then you are good to go!

Unfortunately, if your sport of choice is Scuba Diving, Downhill Skiing or High Contact Sports that would risk a blow to the stomach, doctor’s recommend that you don’t participate in these activities during pregnancy.
single leg pushup

4. You Can Keep Running Throughout Your Pregnancy: Pregnancy running is a safe workout. Be sure to monitor your RPE and recognize that as your body changes, and your weight increases your times will slow down, and your balance will change. Be careful on runs of any tripping hazards, and don’t run in extreme heat. Be sure to re-hydrate after your run and support the exercise with good nutritional choices. Pregnancy is not the time for a calorie deficit.

running

5. During the First Trimester Monitor How Hot You Get During Workouts. The first trimester is a fragile time of growth. The baby is completely dependent on you to maintain it’s body temperature. Stay hydrated and avoid working out in extreme temperatures. If you have a fever, skip your workout. Women who are already athletic are more efficient at regulating their body temperature and are not as prone to overheating. Your temperature should remain within 3 degrees of normal.

18 minute cardio sweat post workout

Pregnancy is not the time to finish your workout lying on a mat, sweating and gasping for air! Pace yourself & monitor your Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE). If it feels “too hard” it is!

6. You Can Work Your Core During Pregnancy: During the first trimester you can maintain your normal core workout routine as long as it doesn’t cause you any discomfort. When you enter the second trimester, some women need to stop all supine (lying on your back) exercises because they cause dizziness or nauseousness. This is due to increased pressure on a major blood vessel called the Vena Cava, which can reduce blood flow to you and your baby. If you experience these symptoms change positions and discontinue supine exercises. There are still plenty of standing core exercises you can do! A strong core will help improve posture, decrease back pain during pregnancy, and improve the ease of labor.

Some core exercises will place you at increased risk of Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation) during the later stages of pregnancy. You don’t have to worry in the first trimester about abdominal separation because there isn’t a lot of abdominal pressure yet. Keeping your transverse abdominals strong can reduce your risk of Diastasis Recti, but it also helps to avoid core exercises where your abs bulge outward. For example, crunches. During my workouts, I always say “Keep your core strong.” That means engage the transverse abs by pulling them in toward your back. During all core exercises, planks, and pushups focus on keeping the transverse abs engaged. If it is difficult to keep your core engaged by pulling the transverse abs in during a particular exercise try switching to a different exercise.

leg-2Bcircles-2Bcore

Even during exercises that would traditionally bulge the abdominal muscles outward, you can engage the transverse abs by pulling the core in strongly. During the first Trimester it is safe to perform core exercises on your back.

7. You Can Continue Strength Training During Pregnancy: Focusing on proper form during pregnancy is very important because you hormones are promoting increased flexibility. If you use improper form this can increase your risk of injury. As always, listen to your body. If it feels like the workout is to intense, decrease the amount of weight you are using. Don’t worry about setting PRs in weight lifting while you are pregnant. Focus on choosing the right exercises to make you and baby stronger and healthier.

10-minute-weighted-interval-001

Don’t hold your breath while lifting weights, as it can increase abdominal pressure & reduce oxygen to yourself and the baby. Although it isn’t time to aim for new weight lifting PRs, lifting weights is great for keeping your strength and staying healthy throughout your pregnancy.

8. If You Have Any of the Following Symptoms Stop Your Workout: Vaginal Bleeding, Dizziness/feeling faint, extreme shortness of breath, chest pain, headache, muscle weakness, calf pain or swelling, uterine contractions, decreased fetal movement, or leaking fluid. Check with your doctor regarding your symptoms, and when it is appropriate to start working out again. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever workout again during your pregnancy, it just means that you should stop this workout & consult with your doctor.

9. If You Have Any of the Following Diagnosis You Should Not Work Out Unless Medically Cleared to do so By Your Doctor: Significant heart disease, restrictive lunge disease, incompetent cervix, multiple gestation at risk for premature labor, persistent 2nd and 3rd trimester bleeding, Placenta Previa after 26-weeks gestation, premature labor during the current pregnancy, ruptured membranes, or pregnancy inducted hypertension (high blood pressure).

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time! Let’s start the week off right with a brand new workout! Today’s workout takes 20-Minutes to complete 1-Round. Depending on how much time you have, you can stop after one round, or repeat it up to 3X for 60-Minutes total workout time.

When I teach this style of workout in my Boot Camp classes we do 2-Rounds plus a 10-Minute Warm-up and Cool Down for a total workout time of 60-Minutes. It’s important to listen to your body.

In case you didn’t hear the big news that I posted about in my Surprise! 2016 Will Be a Year of Change… Blog Post….I am expecting a baby in late June or early July. I am almost out of the first trimester, but if you are wondering why I am not pushing 100% and going as hard as I normally do during the workout that’s why. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be pushing as hard as you are able to go!

During the first trimester the baby is unable to regulate it’s body temperature, so although it’s fine to workout at a moderate intensity (you should be able to talk) you don’t want to work out so hard that your body temperature shoots up & you are gasping for air. I could have pushup a little bit harder than I did in this video, but I wasn’t feeling 100% so I listened to my body and kept it a bit lighter today.

Another thing about being pregnant….at times (like tonight) there are extreme amounts of bloating. It looks like I have a baby bump in the video, but it’s not actually there yet. I took the photo below yesterday. Fluctuations throughout the day are normal & nothing to worry about!

Hi Everyone!

We have Big News! We are excited to announce that the BenderFitness team is growing. Jesse and I will be welcoming Baby Bender in late June or early July of 2016. We have been anxiously awaiting the right time to share our wonderful news with all of you. I am 12.5 weeks pregnant, and about to start my second Trimester of pregnancy.

So what does that mean for BenderFitness workouts? I will continue to film new workouts throughout my pregnancy, barring any complications that would prevent me from safely working out. I will not be able to go as full out high intensity during my workouts, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be pushing!

benderfitness announcement 2_Fotor

I have been more tired during the first trimester (and filming far fewer workouts). So I have also decided to start the New Year with a 12-Week Workout Challenge made up of older BenderFitness workout videos. The nice thing about having over 700 workouts in the BenderFitness archive to choose from is that we always have options!

I was torn between hosting three new 30-Day Workout Programs, or hosting my 12-Week Bikini Prep Program with some updated Diet advice and modifications. I have decided to create three new 30-Day Workout Programs that will combine both older BenderFitness Workouts and some of the new ones Jesse and I will be filming. I will also be hosting a new DietBet challenge for those of you with weight loss goals this year, to run along with the workout challenge. It’s been a year since my last DietBet challenge, but I saw people make huge progress with the extra motivation. I will be posting more about the challenge, so be sure to check back!

benderfitness announcement 3_Fotor

I am excited to share another aspect of my fitness journey with you all! It will also be interesting to see how my body responds to pregnancy & post-pregnancy fitness. There are a lot of myths and rumors out there about working out while you are pregnant and I look forward to sharing a lot of helpful information about pre-and-post natal exercise as I embark on this new journey.

Cheers to an Exciting New Year!
Melissa & Jesse

PS We had so much fun shooting our Pregnancy Announcement photos that I couldn’t choose just one to share with you all! Special Thanks to Lee Ann Freeman at Generations Photography & Specialty Gift Shoppe. She did our wedding photos and announcement photos, and I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out!

Hi Everyone!

I have a great workout for you today! This is a full body workout that incorporates weights and body weight exercises. It will help you burn fat, build lean muscle, and shape your entire body.

In today’s workout I used a 75 lb barbell. If you don’t have a barbell, you can use dumbbells, or complete the exercises with body weight. If you don’t have weights, but you want to increase the challenge you can find something around your house (water jugs, canned food, etc). If you get creative with your weights, tag me in your photos on Instagram or Facebook- @BenderFitness or www.facebook.com/MelissaBenderFitness. It helps others come up with new ideas!

Another option is to substitute cardio bursts for the weighted exercises (High Knees or Burpees), but I definitely recommend the weighted variation as it will help you sculpt and strengthen your body & give you a major calorie burn.

I am filming a new workout (or two) this morning so if you check back later there will be a brand new Body Weight HIIT workout posted.

Have fun with today’s workout & I hope you work up an awesome sweat!

Hi Everyone!

It’s been a busy week, with some tough workouts. It’s time to stretch it out with a Yoga Flow. So far this week our workout schedule has been:

Sunday: I did an 8-Mile Run Outside.

Monday: 15 Minute Flab-u-less Arm Workout with Cardio Fat Burn

Tuesday: 15 Minute Cardio HIIT All Over Fat Burn Workout & Thigh Sculpt

Wednesday: 15 Minute Sculpted Body Home Workout with Dumbbells

Thursday: Today is a Yoga Flow.

This flow is short, about 20 minutes, but it can be repeated. Yoga is all about balance, so this workout helps tone and strengthen your entire body. Maintaining flexibility in your muscles and joints helps relieve pain and prevent injury.

Here are some other Yoga Flows you might enjoy: Yoga Flows. Have fun with today’s workout! Yesterday we had a celebration dinner for my sister finishing her last ever college course, and tonight we are going to the newest Star Wars movie premiere. Friday is Jesse’s birthday, but we are planning on filming this weekend. It has been crazy hectic lately, which I will be writing more about, but there ARE new workouts headed your way! We just haven’t had time to film them yet!

Hi Everyone!

Get out your dumbbells for today’s workout! We are going to work on sculpting strong and beautifully shaped muscles. I used 20-lb dumbbells in today’s workout, but you can choose an amount of weight that is challenging for you.

If you are doing this routine with body weight only, try to increase the number of reps. My recommendations for reps are below, but you can always adjust the workout to meet your own training needs.

There are a lot of great reasons to incorporate weight training into your workout routine. Weight training helps improve your metabolism & burn fat by increasing your lean muscle mass, it decreases your chances of developing osteoporosis as you age, and it improves your strength. Muscles give your body shape and help sculpt your physique.

So far this week we have done:

Monday: 15-Minute Flab-U-Less Arm Workout with Cardio Fat Burn

Hi Everyone!

Today’s workout is a Cardio Fat Burn Workout. One round takes 15-Minutes. You can repeat this workout if you want to increase the challenge. Yesterday we did the 15-Minute Flab-U-Less Arm Workout with Cardio Fat Burn. I hope you’re ready to get sweaty today!

15 minute burn

Burn after 1 Round of today’s workout. There is also some after-burn. I didn’t stop my watch immediately after finishing the round.

I found today’s workout very challenging. My thighs were burning like crazy and I had to stop a few times. Remember, it’s okay to struggle. It’s okay to breath hard, and take rest breaks, as long as you push yourself to get back into it as soon as you are able to. These workouts make you stronger and improve your cardiovascular fitness. Through consistency we become stronger and more efficient with our workouts.

post workout burn

After two rounds! 441 Calories burned in 30-Minutes

As you guys can see I burned 441 Calories after 2 Rounds. In just 30-Minutes of working out that’s a lot of calories! The number of calories you burn will vary based on your height, weight, and the intensity level that you workout at. My polar watch comes with a heart rate monitor so it tracks very accurately. Everyone is different, but you can get an idea of the type of burn you are getting.

I hope you all enjoy today’s workout! Let me know how many rounds you get in!

Hi Everyone!

I created this workout as part of one of my 30-Day Workout Challenges. This is a great routine that is focused on sculpting your arms, while still giving you a full body workout and fat burn.

This routine utilizes compound exercises to maximize the lean muscle building and fat burning. Compound exercises (exercises that require you to use multiple joints and muscles at one time) have a significantly higher calorie burn both during and after your workout.

We are on winter break until January for teaching our Boot Camp and Yoga classes, so I am planning on filming a few new workouts this week. This weekend has been beautiful. It’s mid-December and we are having weather in the high 60s Fahrenheit. Jesse and I have taken full advantage of the weather and get outside to run. At this time of year Pennsylvania is normally frigid so I wanted to take the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and warmth.

Saturday we did a 5-Mile Run Outside. Sunday we got in an 8.34-Mile Run outside with a group of our friends.

I hope that you all enjoy today’s workout! You can find me on Instagram and Twitter: @BenderFitness and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MelissaBenderFitness.
