Kickin’ Cardio Fat Blast & Love Handle Loser Core Workout

Good Morning Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today’s workout combines a Cardio Fat Blasting workout, and an Interval Core Workout. This combination will help strengthen and sculpt your muscles, while simultaneously burning any fat that is hiding those muscles.

Both workouts are HIIT style, so be sure to push yourself to get in your maximum number of reps, while also focusing on maintaining good form.

Last night my workout was a little bit different. I did a few weighted lower body exercises (Romanian Deadlifts, Plie Squats, and Sit to Stands) and followed it up with a 3.36 mile run/walk combo. Jesse and I were joined by a friend who is just starting a running program. He recently quit smoking, and is making all kinds of positive changes for his health.

Tonight we teach a yoga class. If you want a Yoga workout for today you can find them here: Yoga Workouts. Remember, our muscles grow stronger when we recover. Flexibility also improves your biomechanics, range of motion during each exercise, and reduces your risk of injury. I know a lot of people don’t love yoga as much as I do, but it is fantastic for your body. I also find that it is wonderful for the mind as well if you focus on each movement and being fully present during each exercise.

Have fun with today’s workout!

Hi Everyone!

Are you ready for today’s workout? It’s a 20-Minute per round HIIT workout. This one will give you a great cardio burn, while simultaneously shaping and strengthening your muscles. Grab a pair of dumbbells and get ready to sweat!

As you go through this workout remember to push yourself to get in your maximum number of repetitions. HIIT is great because it can be adjusted for all levels, but you get out what you put in. If you need to rest during any interval that’s okay, but get back into it as quickly as you can.

Today’s workout is a throwback. It’s actually Day 6 from my Original 30-Day Workout Challenge. If you haven’t checked out the challenge yet you should!

Last night Jesse and I taught our group Boot Camp class. We got in a great HIIT workout that was 32-Minutes for one round, and paired it with a 10-Minute Warm up and 10-Minute Cool Down.

I hope you have fun with today’s workout and get in a great sweat! Let me know what you think and how you’re feeling! You can find me on Instagram and Twitter: @BenderFitness and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MelissaBenderFitness

Enjoy!

12-Minute Low Impact Pregnant HIIT Home Workout

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time!

I have been greatly enjoying being off of work today! It’s amazing how much more I can get done during the extra time in my day! I finally had time to film a brand new workout for you. This is a low impact, but effective workout for your entire body. I used one 15-lb dumbbell in this workout, but you can go with a heavier dumbbell (or two!) to increase the challenge.

One round of this workout will only take 12-Minutes if you decide to go through it HIIT style. I also posted a Repetition option with the video below. These quick workouts can be done alone, repeated, or stacked with other workouts to create a more intense training session. There are over 700-different workout videos on this website, so you have plenty to choose from!

I posted my Lean Muscle Stretch & Fat Burn: 20-Minute HIIT Home Workout this morning for all of my early bird friends looking for a BenderFitness workout to start the day right.

I am currently 26 Weeks and 6 Days pregnant, so almost 27 weeks already. A full term pregnancy is 40-Weeks (technically 10-Months), so I have 3-Months left to go. My due date in June 29th, but I have a feeling that Baby Bender won’t be making his appearance until early July.

27 weeks pregnant belly benderfitness_Fotor

Almost 27-Weeks Pregnant! 26 Weeks & 6 Days Pregnant.

I feel fantastic with my pregnancy. I have heard horror stories about being pregnant, so I have to admit I expected that it was something I was going to endure until the baby is born. I have been pleasantly surprised! I love being pregnant. I love feeling my active little guy kicking, rolling, and bouncing around. I love seeing him move in my belly. I like that he kicks when I sing him songs, and I am convinced that his favorite song is “Feeling Good,” but that may be because it’s my favorite song to sing.

I have been keeping a Pregnancy Fitness Journal, and logging my workouts throughout. I don’t always get in a formal workout, but I try to be active for at least 30-Minutes per day, whether that is running, walking, doing a workout, or teaching a fitness class. As a result I am feeling fantastic.

I am eating a wide variety of foods. Studies have shown that what you eat during your pregnancy helps shape the babies food preferences in life. I love vegetables, and that is primarily what I am craving. Being home today gave me a chance to try out my new Spiralizer and make a delicious & simple meal of Zucchini Noodles in Sun Dried Tomato Pesto with Sliced Grape Tomatoes. SO GOOD! Baby Bender did plenty of moving after I ate, so I think he liked it too.

zuch_Fotor

Homemade Zucchini Noodles with Sundried Tomato Pesto and Grape Tomatoes.

I really hope you enjoy today’s workout! Even if you aren’t pregnant, it’s a good one. Focus on form during each exercise, and select a weight that challenges you. I combined this workout with a 3.1 Mile Treadmill run, and a 10-Minute walking cool down. I took a quick break at the 2-Mile mark to make sure I wasn’t over-doing it, and I continuously monitored my effort by talking to the baby during my run. I was able to keep a talking pace & finished in a total time of 27:27 (not including my 1-2 minute rest break after mile 2). During pregnancy it’s important to monitor your effort level.

Have fun, and let me know what you think about the workout!
Melissa

PS I am still teaching longer, HIIT Boot Camp Workouts 1X Per Week, and I have several to film for you. Jesse is at work & I was nervous to try and film anything higher impact without him here. I don’t want to knock over the tripod & camera, but I do want to show you how I am modifying these workouts.

Remember, pregnant or not, listen to your body, focus on form & get in those workouts!

PPS I am already addicted to my Spiralizer. I made Ginger Seared Salmon in Tahini Broth with Green Chile-Scallion Relish and Zucchini Noodles. It was a variation of this recipe from Inspiralized.com. I just modified to use the ingredients I had at home.

Lean Muscle Stretch & Fat Burn: 20 Minute Home Workout

Hi Everyone!

Today’s workout is a different type of challenge! It utilizes movements that require strength and stretches your muscles at the same time. This is a great way to build lean muscle while maintaining your flexibility. I also incorporated cardio bursts throughout the workout to keep your heart rate up and burn fat.

I found this routine challenging, and I hope you do too! Push yourself throughout to do the most reps you can with good form. With workouts you get out what you put in, so you really want to challenge yourself. The goal is to challenge your body, work up a sweat, and increase your heart rate.

Flexibility is also important for all of your workouts because it allows you to utilize your full range of motion during every exercise you do. This means you are using your muscles more fully during each exercise. This workout utilizes each plane of motion to help you achieve muscular balance and strength throughout your body, while maintaining bio-mechanical alignment.

When I filmed this, I followed one round of this workout with a 30-Minute run outside.

I am off of work today, so will be playing catch-up with blogging and responding to comments. 🙂

Have fun with this one!

Equipment Free Workout to Sculpt your Belly and Booty

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today’s workout is focused on the Belly and Booty. Sculpt and shape your backside and tummy at the same time. During each exercise focus on proper form and range of motion (ROM).

This workout utilizes the large and small muscles of each area that we are targeting. This will help promote balance and strength in your body. You don’t want to create strength in one area, while neglecting another. Neglect can lead to skeletal adaptations and uneven strength, which can wreak havoc on your alignment.

belly-and-butt-033

I am now 26.5 weeks pregnant (not in the video, this was filmed pre-pregnancy). I don’t do any core exercises where I lie on my back or belly, and I am really missing the variety of exercises that I used to have at my disposal. I love working the core, because it is the foundation of strength for the rest of your body.

I am really looking forward to being cleared for a full workout routine after Baby Bender is born. This is my first baby, so I don’t know exactly what to expect when he is born. I will be waiting until my doctor clears me for a full exercise program, but I plan on getting myself walking as quickly as possible after birth. When I am at work I always tell my patients “Movement is the best medicine” and I firmly believe that (plus there is peer reviewed scientific research out there to support that).

drive in superman

I planned on filming a new workout yesterday, but I had a horrible, lingering headache through much of the day. When I finally felt better we went to the Drive-In to see Superman V. Batman (have I mentioned I am a total comic book nerd?) I also LOVE going to the Drive-In. I made sure I got in over 10,000 steps yesterday, but I skipped a formal workout because I just wasn’t feeling up to it.

Enjoy today’s workout!

Hi Everyone!

It’s time for another workout! Today’s workout is a full body routine that alternates timed exercises with repetitions. I use a jump rope in this video, but you can substitute rope less jumping, high knees, or Burpees if you don’t have one. I also posted the options for Interval Style or Repetitions. If you do this workout HIIT style it will only take 10-Minutes per round, or you can do it for Intervals (the way I filmed the video) for a longer workout.

You can repeat this workout up to 3X. As always, focus on form during the exercises. Do not sacrifice form for speed.

Tonight I teach yoga class. I have to modify more and more as my belly grows, but Jesse demonstrates the full versions of poses for the class. I will be posting more about modifications and how pregnancy has changed my workouts.

Good Morning Everyone!

It’s time for another workout! This workout only takes 10-Minutes Per Round. So you can pair with another workout, or repeat it to get in a more intense workout. You can also vary the workout to alternate Reps and Cardio. I filmed the workout HIIT style, but you can always aim for getting in Repetitions instead. I like to alternate both, because each style of workout challenges you differently.

Yesterday I posted a Birthday Burpee Challenge. If you haven’t tried it yet, I challenge you to add it to today’s workout! I turned 33 years old yesterday, and I challenge you to add 33 Burpees to your workout. I didn’t do it yesterday, but I will be doing it today.

Good Morning Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today’s workout is a quick, but very effective full body home workout. This routine is from my 12-Week Bikini Competition Prep Series. During that workout series I decided to train at home for an NPC Fitness Competition, and shared every workout that I did along the way.

It’s still my favorite workout series that I have filmed thus far. I am currently planning my Summer/Fall workout series for after Baby Bender is born. It will be interesting to see how my body changes as I progress in my pregnancy, and how it responds to my exercise program. As always, I will be sharing my journey with you here.

My internet has been struggling yesterday and this AM, so I didn’t get yesterday’s recipe posted as planned. Tonight I teach Boot Camp and it’s my birthday so I probably won’t get the recipe up until tomorrow night. It’s still on the agenda though, so check back, and I will share the link on my Facebook page once it is up.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout and find it challenging!

Good Morning Everyone!

It’s a start to a brand new week! Today’s workout is all about boosting your metabolism. This is a throw-back workout that I filmed several years ago. I was traveling to visit my mom. One of the main things I love about body weight workouts is that you can bring them anywhere with you! You never have to miss a workout!

I used to be a Flight Attendant, and when I was traveling so much for work I lost a lot of my fitness, strength and endurance. It was before I learned how to workout. I had been Captain of a Dance Team prior to accepting the Flight Attendant position so dance had always kept me active. I never did a formal workout.

flight attendant combo

About 6-months after I started working as a flight attendant, I decided to go for a run with Jesse (pre-marriage, we were boyfriend/girlfriend). I could barely make it more than a couple of blocks before I had to stop and walk. It was a wake-up call on my level of health and fitness. I was only 24-years old at the time, and I couldn’t run more than a couple of blocks without gasping for air. I’m stubborn, and finding out that there is something I “can’t” do makes me determined to learn how to do it.

When I developed my website I knew that bringing workouts anywhere you go was an important aspect of what I wanted to incorporate into my fitness mission. I wanted to use minimal equipment, so that the workouts were available to anyone, and could be performed anywhere. I had been planning my website for a couple of years before I actually launched it, but I was in graduate school for Occupational Therapy at the time, and learning about Occupational Injustice.

Occupational Injustice is when people are limited from achieving full life satisfaction & optimization due to exclusion, inequality and limited opportunities. There is more to it than that, but that’s just a brief summary. This is rampant in health care and fitness. People with better insurance policies have better treatment options. People without insurance often skip visits to doctors or hospitals even when they should go. This doesn’t even touch on the fact that there is a woeful amount of misinformation out there about what is “Healthy” and “Un-Healthy.” Health Impacts EVERY Aspect of Your Life. Fitness Directly Impacts Your Health. These ideas are the foundation of this website.

I hope that you are finding it useful on your mission to create a healthier lifestyle. Enjoy today’s workout!

Good Morning Everyone!

It’s Friday, so I wanted to take a minute and share links for all of the workouts I posted this week. Remember, you should be taking 1-2 Active Rest days per week. That means you do something that keeps you moving, but doesn’t significantly raise your heart rate or challenge your body. Your muscles build and repair when they rest. This means that rest days actually help you see your results more quickly.

On Active Rest days I like to walk, hike, or go for a very easy paced run. You can schedule your workouts in whatever way works best for your schedule. You can repeat each workout, or even pair it with a different workout if you like variety.

The important thing to do to stay on track is make sure that your workout schedule works with your lifestyle. Also, recognize that your workouts are just as important as your other priorities and schedule them into your life. Your health isn’t negotiable. It impacts every aspect of your life, from how you feel in your relationships, your work efficiency, going through your days pain free, and more.

Don’t let your health be optional. It’s to important. I work as an Occupational Therapist, and every day I see the impact of long term lifestyle choices on people’s recovery times after illness or accidents. What you do today will impact your future health.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout! You can check in with me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MelissaBenderFitness or on Instagram/Twitter: @BenderFitness

Low Impact Lower Body Workout: No Equipment Legs, Thighs & Butt Workout

Hi Everyone!

Are you ready for a Low Impact, but very effective, lower body workout? Don’t let the words Low Impact fool you. This routine workouts your lower body from every angle. When I filmed this workout I filmed my second round, so I was really feeling it.

You can repeat this workout up to 3X and pair it with up to 30-Minutes of cardio of choice. The nice thing about short workouts is you can fit in a round at any point during the day. If you only have time for one round at least you got a workout in! If you have more time you can repeat it or stack it with another workout!

Yesterday was a crazy day for me. I was in a car accident with a deer on my way to work. I am fine, and Baby Bender is fine, but it was very scary. I spent the morning in Labor and Delivery at the hospital having the baby monitored. He hated the device they were using to monitor his heart rate (the sound waves must feel funny) and he kept trying to kick it off of my belly. You could actually see him kicking it all over the place!

End result, he is 100% fine, and I am sore through my sternum (breast bone) from the seat belt. I am teaching a yoga class tonight, but it’s going to be all verbal instruction, with Jesse demonstrating any of the movements for me, because I will be staying off of my arms for a few days. I want to let this soreness heal up before I try anything.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout! Let me know how you are feeling! I will post a link to all of the week’s workout’s tomorrow.

Have fun!

Hi Everyone!

I am seriously missing my core workouts right now! So far I love being pregnant, but being able to do a full core workout without modifications would be amazing. So do me a favor, and get in a good round of this workout for me. Enjoy the fact that you can do an awesome core workout today! 🙂

Jesse and I taught a 60-Minute HIIT Boot Camp class last night. With my modifications I burned about 350 Calories. One of my friends who too the class burned over 560 calories. Remember, how hard you push during the workout definitely impacts your burn.

There is always a way to modify, and modifying is 100% fine as long as it is still challenging to your body. Don’t modify because it’s the “easier” version. Modify, because it’s still challenging to you and you haven’t built up to the more difficult variation (yet!) Also, if you have an injury, pregnancy, etc, always modify as needed to make sure you are doing what is healthiest for your body. Health should always be a priority of fitness. Pushing to (or past) the point of injury, doesn’t help anyone achieve results or health.

Full Body Bender: Home Workout

Hi Everyone!

It’s time for another throwback workout! Today’s workout is a full body routine. I use weights for the last two exercises. If you have weights available, use them to add to the challenge. I use a barbell, but you can also use dumbbells.

I completed this workout for reps, but you can challenge yourself by timing the workout & moving from one exercise to the next as quickly as possible.

Jesse and I teach a Boot Camp HIIT class this evening. We will be teaching a 60-Minute class. Our workout will consist of a 10-Minute Warm-up, 2 Rounds of 20-Minute HIIT (40-Minutes total), and a 10-Minute Cool Down. I am behind on filming our boot camp workouts, so I have a few new ones on our “To Film” list. I still do the full workout with the class (like I do in the videos with you), but I am modifying more exercises now.

I hope I can get my abs back to looking like they do in this workout video after Baby Bender is born! I’m almost 25-Weeks pregnant now, and my belly seems to be growing by leaps and bounds! I am looking forward to sharing a new workout program with you after the baby is born. In the mean time I am enjoying my baby bump.

6 months pregnant

I have been monitoring for Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation) and so far I don’t have any. I will be writing an article specifically on Diastasis Recti and Pelvic Floor exercises as soon as I have some free time. As an Occupational Therapist one of the areas I have trained in is Urinary Continence and Pelvic Floor strengthening. I am hoping to start an Outpatient program where I work after my maternity leave.

I love my job, but working full time, blogging, teaching two group fitness classes per week, running, and being pregnant hasn’t left me with a lot of free time to get my To Do list checked off lately. It’s all totally worth it because I love what I do, but I wish there were more hours to the day. Thank you guys for bearing with me, and being supportive as I share a lot of older workouts right now.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout!
Melissa

For an added challenge go through the workout as quickly as possible with your Gymboss Interval Timer set to stopwatch. Do not sacrifice from for speed, but be sure to challenge yourself throughout the workout!

Hi Everyone!

It’s workout time! Today we have a brand new workout for you. This is a full body workout. All you need is some space and a dumbbell. If you don’t have access to dumbbells you can grab something from around the house to add some resistance, or complete the exercises with body weight only.

We designed this workout for runner’s. Runner’s require cross training to maximize running form and efficiency, and prevent injury. This workout focuses on the muscles that runner’s tend to have imbalances in due to the specificity of their training.

Jesse has noticed less pain, less injury, improved form and efficiency by incorporating exercises like today’s program into his routine. Remember, preventing injury is one of the best ways to keep yourself healthy & maximize your potential in any sport or athletics.

If you aren’t a runner this is still a great full body workout! I hope you enjoy today’s routine. I always love when Jesse teaches a workout!

15-Minute HIIT: Full Body Fat Burning Home Workout

Hi Everyone!

It’s time to workout! Today’s workout is a 15-Minute Per Round HIIT that will work your entire body. I love short but intense HIIT workouts because they are great for burning fat, while maintaining lean muscle (you need this to maximize your metabolism, strength and give your body shape!) Also, the shorter duration means no excuses!

If you only have 15-minutes you can still get in a great workout. If you have longer, you can repeat the workout or pair it with another workout to increase the intensity.

During this workout I utilize some dumbbells to increase the challenge. Don’t be afraid to add some resistance to your workouts. Muscle is a good thing! It doesn’t just make you stronger (isn’t that incentive enough?), it helps you burn more during every workout.

I posted a breakdown for intervals and for Repetitions so you can choose the workout style that is best for you today. As always, focus on form. If you are going for Intervals push yourself to get in as many reps as possible during each interval. I find that it helps to set a goal number in my head to push for, and to track how many reps you get in for each exercise. The extra motivation of setting a goal can give you the incentive to push just a little bit harder.

You get out what you put into your workouts, and your health and fitness are worth the extra push.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout. The breakdown is below.

Fitbit Surge: Product Review

Standard

Hi Everyone!

I have received a lot of questions about the watch I wear in my workout videos. I wanted to take a few minutes to do a Product Review of the Fitbit Surge. This is the watch that I wear in my workout videos to track my heart rate and calories burned. It’s also a GPS watch and pedometer, so I track my steps all day long, and even log/track all of my running right on the device.

I am going to talk about what the watch does, Pros & Cons, and Upgrades I would love to see in the future.

Fitbit has many products that track steps and/or heart rate. I selected this one because it also has the GPS tracking for runs. I was previously using the Garmin Forerunner to track my runs, but I liked the idea of having all of my workouts & daily activity synced in one place for easy tracking.

I have been using this product for 3-Months now. I wanted to allow enough time to get used to it and try it in a variety of situations before giving my opinion. I haven’t tried other activity trackers, so I can’t give you a direct comparison, but I can tell you what I like about this product, and what changes I would like to see.

So what does this watch do?

-Tracks Steps/Activity throughout the day

-Tracks Heart Rate

-Tracks Sleep & Sleep Quality

-Tracks Multi-Sport Workouts, including indoor workouts

-GPS Tracking

-Alarm Clock

-Receives Text Notifications

-Controls Songs from your Phone Playlist

-Wirelessly Syncs with an App on Your Phone

Pros, Cons & Suggested Upgrades

-Tracks Steps/Activity throughout the day

IMG_6972

Pros: I love tracking my steps. I find it very motivating, and it encourages me to get my body moving on days that are slow. If I see that my steps are low, I am motivated to get them higher. That might mean walking up and down my staircase, or getting out for a walk or run. Steps are a quick way to show you how much you are moving & to help you spot trends in your workout activity.

Cons: The accuracy of step tracking is dependent on how much you move your arms. If you are walking or running it will track very accurately. If you are pushing a stroller or wheelchair, or carrying something you will not be tracking all of your steps. I am an Occupational Therapist, so I spend a lot of my time pushing wheelchairs of my patients that are too de-conditioned to make the long walk to/from the therapy gym. At work the pedometer on my phone typically says I walk 1000-2000 more steps than my Fitbit reports, because my arm is still while I push a wheelchair. I am currently pregnant, and I plan on running/walking with Baby Bender in a Stroller, so this will impact my tracked steps.

Suggested Upgrades: I would love to see an option to add a tracker that can be placed on your sneakers. If I was the designer, I would create a device, much like the small race chips you tie to your shoelaces, that would sync with the phone to track steps even when your arms aren’t swinging. If you know that you are going to be running or walking while pushing a stroller/wheelchair, or doing a lot of carrying, you can place this device on your shoe to sync for a more accurate step count. It’s not something you would need all the time, and it would be a great option for people impacted by this issue.

-Tracks Heart Rate

Pros: This device tracks your heart rate directly from the watch band. You don’t have to wear a separate heart rate monitor strap across your chest. This is a big pro for me, because I have gotten friction burns, and rubbed off skin under the chest strap of other heart rate monitors (OUCH!) It also tracks your resting heart rate while sleeping, heart rate during each workout, and helps determine your calories burned during the day.

Cons: Occasionally the heart rate has difficulty capturing. The recommendation is to wear the band higher and tighter on the wrist during workouts. Mine seems to be accurate when I compare it to a manual check of my heart rate. My husband has noticed that during runs his heart rate doesn’t always match his rate of perceived exertion, and it seems to be reporting his heart rate on a delay compared to the actual workout. For example, if he is doing a hard interval workout, it might say his heart rate is higher during the “easy” intervals, than during the “hard” intervals.

-Tracks Sleep & Sleep Quality

IMG_6974

Pros: The watch and app work together to show you not only your total number of hours slept each night, but it also tracks your average each week. The tracking is based on how much you move while sleeping. If you toss and turn a lot, it will show that you have a lower quality of sleep. When you stay still it shows deeper portions of your sleep cycle. If you get up to use the bathroom or get some water, it will show that you are awake. You can adjust the sensitivity of the watch to be normal or sensitive.

Cons: None, just check your sensitivity settings for the most accurate reading. I keep mine on normal, but I am very good at sleeping!

-Tracks Multi-Sport Workouts, including indoor workouts

Pros: You can add the activities/workouts that you most commonly use directly on your watch. The watch will automatically recognize walking and running after 10 minutes. You can use the GPS option for outdoor workouts such as running, walking, hiking or biking.

For indoor workouts you select the workout you want & it will track your heart rate, length of workout and calories burned. You can use your heart rate and calorie burn to directly see how much your effort level will impact your burn. When you sync this into the app it will track all of your workouts, and your Active Minutes over the course of the week. You can easily click on each workout, or go to a specific date to see what your workout/activity level was.

Cons: You have to go to the website app to add workouts & sync it to your phone. I was unable to add my desired workouts directly from the watch.

For treadmill workouts you may have to adjust your stride length to make sure your readings are accurate. My treadmill workout readings were under by .3 miles (that’s more than one lap around a track!) per mile. For every mile I ran, it said I was only running .7 miles.

To fix this problem I did both a live chat with a customer service representative, and a twitter request. The twitter request was accurately addressed and I was provided the right information right off the bat. The live chat did not go so well. The customer service representative did not now how to fix the issue, and until I specifically asked if there was a way to adjust stride length for increased accuracy she did not give me any information on this option. She kept saying that if I put in my height and weight correctly, and swung my arms during my workout it should be 100% accurate. When I asked about Stride Length adjustments (I was hoping she would bring it up, so anyone with less technical knowledge of the device would obtain the right information) she was able to provide me with the correct information. The link to fix this issue is below:

For the Most Accurate Stride Length and Step Readings Follow These Steps: Fitbit Help: Adjusting Stride Length.

-GPS Tracking

running 21 weeks pregnant

Pros: The GPS tracking seems to be very accurate. It is comparable to the GPS tracking of my Garmin Forerunner, and clicks the miles off at the same times on my normal running route.

Cons: Satellite connection time varies. Before tracking your workout with GPS your watch will link to satellites to track your mileage. Sometimes this happens instantly, other times it can take a couple of minutes. Using the GPS will run down your battery more quickly. Overall, battery life is good, so this isn’t really an issue, but be aware that if you use the GPS option you will have to re-charge your watch more often afterward.

-Alarm Clock

Confession: I haven’t actually used this option. I have all of my alarms pre-set on my phone. I will make a point to try this out & update this section of the review. I do know it is a silent alarm, and will vibrate to wake you up or alert you of the time.

-Receives Text Notifications

Pros: You can be notified of new text messages & read them directly from your watch.

Cons: It seems like every time I teach a group fitness class I get 15-20 text messages from my boss/co-workers regarding what is on the agenda for the next day. It is very distracting to have your wrist constantly buzzing during your workout, particularly when you know it is work related. I like to focus on my workout with no distractions. You can manage notifications and prevent text messages from going to your watch.

-Controls Songs from your Phone Playlist

Pros: Apparently you can control music/song selection directly from your watch.

Cons: I can’t get this to work with my iPhone. When I double click the back button on my watch the music app says “Not Connected.” There are trouble shooting steps for this problem, but I don’t listen to music during the majority of my workouts so it hasn’t been a big issue for me. I will update this section when I go back and re-sync the playlist.

-Wirelessly Syncs with an App on Your Phone

Pros: It’s very easy to sync your steps to the app. Just open the app in your phone, make sure bluetooth is enabled, and your steps, sleep, workouts, etc, will be loaded into the app. You can look at your total steps directly in the watch, or on the app.

I like having all of my workouts synced and easily referenced in one place.

The app is also fun, because you can add friends and join step/activity challenges with them. You will also get “Badges” and “Trophies” for achieving different activity milestones. It is fun and motivating to participate in the challenges with your friends.

I also like that this app syncs with MyFitnessPal so you can directly see how may calories you take in and how many you are expending.

Cons: I haven’t had any issues with the app or syncing process.

Price

Cost: The fitbit surge retails for $249.95.

Hi Everyone!

I am planning on filming a new workout today. It won’t be posted until later, so I have an older (but very fun and effective!) workout for all of you early birds that want to get in your workout!

In this routine I use a stability ball, but I also show body weight variations in the photo tutorial below. If you don’t have a stability ball that’s no problem! There is always a way to modify a workout to make it suit what you have available at home (or on the go while you travel!)

I posted some challenging workouts this week. I hope you are feeling great, strong and ready to go for today!

I am now 24+ weeks pregnant, so be prepare for a big baby bump in the new workout I film today! I went to the doctor yesterday and my belly was actually measuring two weeks bigger (26 weeks). Those measurements can vary, and I am still within the normal range, but based on how active Baby Bender is & how hard he kicks I think he is going to be big and strong. Hopefully not crazy big though, because barring any complications I am going for an all-natural delivery.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout!

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are ready for a good stretch and strength yoga flow today. If you have been following along with this week’s workouts your body is probably ready for a more low impact workout today!

Below I have included links to the workouts I have posted so far this week:

Sunday: No Equipment: Full Body Workout: 20 Minutes Per Round

Monday: No Equipment Home Cardio Fat Burn: Full Body HIIT

Tuesday: Tight Stomach & Sculpted Booty Workout

Wednesday: Weighted Sweat & Sculpt Workout: Home Body Shaping & Cardio

Rest and strength go hand in hand. Your muscles grow stronger during the recovery and re-building process. Stretching, rest days, and active rest days help improve the speed of your physical results. You should incorporate 1-2 rest days per week into your workout routine.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout!

Hi Everyone!

Today’s workout is a fun challenge.

In this workout I use a jump rope, but you can easily substitute Ropeless Jumping if you don’t have access (or space) to use a jump rope. I also use two dumbbells to increase the challenge. These exercises can be performed with body weight, but the added challenge of weights will help you sculpt even faster, and increase the challenge.

When I filmed it I did one round HIIT style for time, and completed the second round for reps. You can choose the style that works best for you. I included the full length HIIT video, and a tutorial video below. I like to switch up the challenge because it makes your body work in two different ways.

As always, focus on form during each movement. You will maximize the benefit of each exercise by using full range of motion, and ensure you are targeting the correct muscles.

I am still hosting my March Bonus Challenge Move on Instagram: @BenderFitness. I included the video for today’s move at the bottom of the page (below the workout tutorial) so be sure to check that out, and add it to your workout today for an extra burn.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout!

Hi Everyone!

Today’s workout combo is focused on sculpting your core & your lower body. This routine combines two short workouts. The first workout is body weight only. The second workout I used dumbbells and a chair or bench. You can modify and do the workout with weights, but I recommend using them if they are available to you.

Both workouts combine some fantastic movement patterns to really engage your muscles from every angle. Each set of muscles in your core, glutes and legs, is responsible for a different movement pattern. By using full range of motion in multiple planes of movement we are maximizing the muscle recruitment & creating balanced strength in our bodies.

I also posted my #MarchMovement #BenderFitnessChallenge move at the bottom of this post. I am posting a daily bonus exercise challenge move every day this month on my Instagram page: @BenderFitness

For my workout yesterday I got in another run. The weather is starting to warm up and I needed to get outside.

Jesse and I have a few new workouts planned to film for you this week. I won’t be doing today’s core workout due to my baby bump, but I will be doing the 10-Minute Booty Sculpt when I get home from work tonight. The weather should be in the 70s (Fahrenheit) today, so I will also get out for a run or walk.

I hope you enjoy today’s workout!
