If you’re anything like me you love chocolate and peanut butter together. Instead of letting this be a downfall in your healthy eating habits maybe it’s time to embrace this delcious combo and make it as healthy as possible!
The recipe below is healthy, delicious, and delivers plenty of protein (which keeps you full, and helps you build the muscle you need to rev up your metabolism!) Jesse and I tried to today, and we were pleasantly suprised. It was filling and tasty!

Healthy PB cup milkshake
Ingrediants:

1 cup – vanilla unsweetened almond OR soy milk OR regular 1% cow’s milk (I used vanilla soy milk. I was tempted to use the chocolate, but I wanted to try it as the recipe called first)

1 scoop – chocolate rice protein OR chocolate whey protein powder

1 tbsp – peanut butter OR almond butter

(optional) 1 packet of stevia, honey OR maple syrup to taste for sweetness (I didn’t use this, it was sweet enough for me without it)

5 ice cubes

Directions:
Place all items in a blender and blend until smooth.
NOTE: For fruity sweetness you can always add banana to the smoothie and remove the maple syrup, honey or stevia.
Serve in a tall glass and sip away at the guilt free peanut butter cup yumminess!

Let me know what you think, or if you have any recipes to share.

Hi everyone,
My personal Bender is going really well. I am very pleased with the results I have had since I started sharing my workouts with you. This should be a fun week. At some point this week I will be sharing a yoga based stretching routine for runners, or anyone with tight muscles. I am also going to include links to some great (and healthy!) recipes, along with the usual fat burning, body shaping workouts.
If you have been following my workouts, and want to share any results or news, please feel free to comment or message me. I have been getting a lot of great feedback, and it’s very motivating for me. I really enjoy helping people, and being able to share my passion for fitness. Anyone can make their life healthier, and the fact that you’re here watching these workouts means that is something you want.
As the holiday’s approach it is especially important to maintain your fitness. So challenge yourself, and make the commitment to go on your own Fitness Bender.
Melissa
PS In between each rep exercise today I did a timed exercise. I used my interval timer, but you can use a stopwatch or oven timer as well. This type of workout is known to burn more fat, and continue to burn calories throughout the day after your workout. So burn off that fat to reveal the awesome abs and butt you are building!

Hi Everyone,
Cydney joined us again for today’s workout. She has already improved since last week! Last week she did her Burpees from her knees, and this week she did the full pushup. I love seeing and hearing about improvements! It feels great to work hard, and know you are getting better.
Today’s workout includes intervals, and has plenty of cardio fat burn. I used my Gymboss interval timer to keep track of the sections of the workout that are timed, but you can use a stopwatch or oven timer. Weekends can be a tricky time for workouts/eating. Just be sure to stick to what you are doing, and make time for your fitness. If you stick to it you will get results so much faster!
Enjoy today’s workout. I am going to be posting links to some great and healthy recipes later today!

Hi Everyone,
Today’s workout is called Short and Sweat. It’s not long, but it’s a great workout! I interspersed some shots of Jesse doing the workouts throughout the video. Jesse is a distance runner, so these workouts are totally different from what he’s used to. He has already been getting great results by adding these workouts.
Focus on form. Make sure you complete the most reps you can without sacrificing form. You will get better results from doing 5 reps correctly than you would by doing 10 with poor form.
Enjoy the workout!

Hi Everyone!
Today I bring to you the Tough Guy workout. We had special guest, Tony. Tony is a personal trainer who is currently working to compete in a body building competition. This workout is quite different from what he is used to, but he did great!
My husband, Jesse, also made his first appearance on camera. He often joins me for the workouts. I decided to turn the tables and film him. I wanted to let all the guys out there know these workouts aren’t just for women. They are a challenge! So ladies, challenge your honey to join you in this workout! It just might be harder than they think it is. (PS this one is really hard, but you can do it! If you need to, take breaks and modify the workout to your level.) I found this one to be a great challenge. With tons of fat burning, and body shaping this workout will help you get the definition you want.
As a reminder, if you are just starting out don’t be discouraged if this is difficult. It will get easier. The good news is every rep you make is progress! Do what you can. As long as you are pushing yourself you are getting results!
Enjoy! Feel free to leave some feedback!

Hi Everyone,
The song Bootylicious by Destiny’s Child was stuck in my head earlier today, and it inspired this workout. To me bootylicious means two things, a round butt, and a little waist. This workout will help you get both! It’s a tough one, but there are some modifications in the video. Just remember to move from one exercise to the next as quickly as you can, and push yourself to do the harder variations if you are able to. Even doing one full burpee before switching to the knee modification will help improve your fitness faster!
Our guest today is Cydney. Cyd has agreed to let us track her progress, so we will be checking in with her periodically to see how she is doing on her fitness bender. By adding these workouts I think she is going to see great results!
You may have noticed I am trying out a new format for my blog. Let me know what you think! Do you like the new setup, or should we go back to what we had?
Enjoy today’s workout!

Hi Everyone,
I have a great workout for you today! I had fun doing it, and I feel great now. J
Before I give you the breakdown I wanted to talk to you about listening to your body. This goes for your workout, your diet, and your life in general. Many people have been trained to do things like finish their plate of food even if they are full. Does that sound familiar? Maybe you heard, “you’re not leaving this table until you have eaten everything on your plate.” Things like this may be well intended (if someone refuses to eat any vegetables maybe), but they can also teach you not to listen to your body. You forget how to tell when you are full. This can lead to over eating.
The same thing can also happen in your workouts. There are two extremes to this. Extreme number one is the person who consistently pushes themselves to the point of breaking. They will finish this workout, in the best time ever, NO MATTER WHAT! The other extreme is the person who does one rep of an exercise and says “This hurts! I’m done!”
You should never push yourself to the point of injury. You need to be able to tell the difference between the good burn you feel when your muscles are working hard. The exhaustion of a good workout is great. If you start feeling shooting pains during any exercise, stop! The point of fitness is to improve your health not hurt it. So if this sounds like you please focus on listening to your body. Push yourself, but rest when you need it.
If you are the other extreme, and you complete your workout and think to yourself later, “I probably could have done the full set of reps” it’s important to be aware of that tendency. You want to feel the burn, and have good tired muscles.
So learn your tendencies, and be aware of them while you workout. Learn to listen to your body. It knows what it’s doing, and it wants to be fit too!

Hi Everyone!
The new workout is below. I am going to start experimenting with some healthy recipes, and sharing them. If you have any feel free to send them to me! I am still sticking to the increased veggie intake. Did you know that you should be eating between 2 ½ to 4 ½ servings of vegetables every day?
I want to know about your personal workout challenges. Is there anything you find especially difficult? Is there a certain exercise you don’t like? I enjoy challenging myself by doing moves that are difficult for me. It makes it that much more rewarding when those moves start to get easier. Don’t get discouraged if you need to start out with easier variations, or a lower amount of reps. Workout out is a building process. You will see progress!
As always, thanks for checking out my site! I hope you enjoy the workout.

Hi Everyone,
Before we get into today’s workout I want to talk to you about something that can make working out challenging. Emotions. That’s right, how you feel affects how much you want to work out. Sometimes if you are upset or tired you may just want to veg out on the couch and eat ice cream. For other people it’s the exact opposite. If they are upset about something they have to keep moving, and keep doing.
Regardless of which category you fall into it’s important to remember that you are making a choice. You may feel exhausted and lethargic, but pushing yourself through a workout will make you feel a lot better.
For some people the power of choice is intimidating. Sometimes it seems easier to let things happen to you, and to blame the world. There are things that you can’t control that do happen in life. What you can control is the choice you make from there. It’s empowering to realize that every action you do is a choice. Even inaction is a choice.
So how are you going to use that when it comes to your fitness goals? I am going to use it to keep on pushing! I hope you like today’s workout. As always, feel free to leave me some comments/feedback below.

Hi Everyone!
So today’s workout is a tough one! I did high knees in between every exercise to keep my heart rate up, and the fat burn going throughout the workout. We had another guest in today’s video. Kaitlynn is starting out on her own fitness bender. She does a great job demonstrating some of the modifications for today’s workout.
So I wanted to talk about diet this week. As I said earlier a diet isn’t a thing you go on. It is just whatever you eat throughout the day. My food philosophy is eat healthy, and don’t make any foods “off limits.” If you completely deny yourself something it seems that you end up craving it anyway.
Personally, I find the more I work out the healthier I want to eat. When I don’t work out I crave sweets and coffee. Working out helps regulate your blood sugar as well as stimulating your entire body. The metabolism boost does more than just increase weight loss. It also energizes you.
Kaitlynn has a food blog with a lot of great recipes. If you’re interested check them out at: www.kateshomekitchen.blogspot.com
I will also be sharing more of what I eat, and some of my favorite healthy recipes. Are there any diet issues that you struggle with? As always enjoy the workout, and feel free to leave me some feedback!

Fitness Plans Off Track?

Hi Everyone,

I had a very exciting Halloween themed workout planned for last night, but lo and behold my water heater decided to stop working. Getting all hot and sweaty and jumping into a freezing cold shower didn’t appeal to me so I learned how to install a new thermocouple on my water heater. So last night’s workout got scrapped by unexpected home improvements.

What does that mean? Well, for a lot of people one day off means the start of a downward spiral. It means missed workouts, junk food, and exhaustion. Don’t let that be you!

Start each day with a renewed dedication to yourself and your fitness goals. Your health doesn’t just affect you, it affects anyone who cares about you. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself, it is a benefit to everyone you love.

So how do I re-motivate myself? I remind myself that it’s a new day. In the grand course of things one missed workout doesn’t amount to anything. It’s the buildup that counts. You’re worth taking care of. 🙂

There will be a new workout posted late tonight, or tomorrow afternoon. If you’re looking for a workout right now scroll down to the bottom of my page to the “popular posts” section and pick one!

See you soon,
Melissa

Hi Everyone!
Happy Halloween! I hope that you all had a great weekend. Mine was very busy so I was excited to have time to do a real workout tonight and share it with you!
The workout breakdown is below. This week along with workouts I am going to be talking about diet. I don’t mean going on “a diet.” Believe it or not a diet isn’t a thing you go on. It is just a combination of everything that you eat. It’s a lifestyle. Whether you chose to have a healthy or unhealthy diet is up to you.

Hi Everyone!
Today’s workout kicked my butt! You’ll be able to tell by how sweaty I am at the end of the video! J We had a special guest tonight. Stephanie worked out with us, and did a great job. As usual, move quickly between the moves to keep your heart rate up and maintain the fat burn. Make sure you have water nearby and you push yourself the whole time!
I have been keeping up with my “veggie with every meal” plan! I have to say I have way more energy, and feel more satisfied throughout the day. I am even drinking less coffee!
Anyway, enjoy the workout. Let me know what you think. Feel free to share your comments or concerns.

Hi Everyone!
When you scroll down to view today’s workout breakdown you will notice that this one has a few exercises with higher reps than the previous ones I have posted. Don’t worry! You can do it! Take breaks if you need too. J Move from one exercise to the next as quickly as you can, and don’t forget to take a few quick water breaks! I don’t want anyone dehydrating out there!
I enjoyed today’s workout, and I hope you do too. As part of my fitness journey I have decided to incorporate more vegetables into my diet. I love veggies so this isn’t really a problem for me, but it’s been interesting. I have been trying to have at least one veggie with every meal. (IE scrambled eggs with spinach, a sandwich with a side of broccoli, etc). If you’re like the majority of the world you probably aren’t getting enough vegetables either. Did you know half your plate should be veggies, ¼ meat and ¼ starch to meet the recommended guidelines?
I would love to hear about some fun veggie recipes, so feel free to share!

Hi Everyone!
If you look at today’s workout list it looks long, but it’s just because we have cardio bursts in between all of the workout moves. This will keep your heart rate up, and burn fat throughout the workout (and the rest of the day!) This workout has a lot of emphasis on legs, butt and thighs. Remember to use correct form and give it your all. The more you put into your workout the more you get out of it!
Also, during the “High Knees” portion of the video make sure you are lifting your knees as high as you can. I filmed the complete workout, and then went through it full speed a second time, and realized that I was pushing my knees a lot harder the second time around (and getting more out of it!)
As usual I welcome feedback and comments!
Thanks for working out with me!

Standing Yoga Flow for butt, thighs, legs and back

Hello Everyone,
This workout is a Standing Yoga Flow. It focuses mostly on the lower body: thighs, butt, legs, and back. However, there are still benefits for your arms and abs.
One of my best friends (a wonderfully talented poet named Rose) challenged me to create a yoga flow that consisted solely of standing poses. I had to keep it short enough to post on youtube so I limited the number of poses I used. This is the result. It’s a short workout (about 15 minutes). You can even do it with the Kick Butt workout or another one of the workouts on my website after doing this one.
Let me know what you think, and be sure to check out Rose’s blog: www.arosewithoutthorns.blogspot.com

Butt Kicker Workout – Melissa Bender Fitness

Hello Everyone,
Today’s workout is the Butt Kicker Workout. When you watch the video you will see why! I had a lot of fun doing this workout and after the Terrific Tummy Toner workout the other day it felt great to get off of my arms, and focus on my legs, butt, core and back.
Yesterday, someone very close to me told me that they would never be able to do my workouts. They said that the workouts are too hard. My response was that if you can even do one or two of each exercise to start that is enough. It doesn’t matter what level of fitness or what shape you are in now. If you decide to change that for the better you can do it! If you’ve overcome a challenge, or have a fear about working out that you would like to share post it below in the comments.
Also, the number of reps below is a guide for you. If 15 is too much then push yourself as hard as you can go with each repetition. As long as you are challenging yourself you are getting a great workout. Just make sure that if you start out with one rep of each exercise this week, next week you are going for 2 reps of each. Just like anything else in life, you get out what you put in. I’m sure you work hard for a LOT of things in life (work, school, family, etc.) Take a moment to remember that YOU are worth working hard for.
Let me know what you think of the workout, and if you have any thoughts on what I have written.
Until next time,
Melissa
“I’ve always found that anything worth achieving will always have obstacles in the way and you’ve got to have that drive and determination to overcome those obstacles on route to whatever it is that you want to accomplish.” -Chuck Norris

For all of these exercises (unless otherwise noted below) reps are as follows:
Beginner: 15 reps
Intermediate: 20 reps
Advanced: 25 reps
1.       Forward Lunge Kicks (right)
-Remember, front knee never goes past your toes. Front thigh should come parallel with the ground. Back knee should be almost touching the floor, but not quite. Form is far more important than speed or how high you can kick.
2.       Forward Lunge Kicks (left)
3.       Side lunge with Kick (right)
4.       Side Lunge with Kick (left)
5.       Roundhouse Kick with chair (right)
6.       Roundhouse Kick with chair (left)
7.       One leg squats with chair (right)
8.       One leg squats with chair (left)
9.       Ab roll on ball
-If you are doing Plank Pose as an alternative to this position hold the position for 30 seconds if you are a beginner, 45 intermediate, and 1 minute if you are advanced. Take a break in between and repeat this 3 times.
10.   3 way sit-ups on ball
One rep consists of all three movements (right, middle, left). If you watch me in the video I turned it into a 4 movement series (right, middle, left, middle=1 rep). The flow of these 4 movements felt more natural to me. Try both and see which works for you.
11.   Leg Circles (right)
-Remember, switch the direction you are circling your foot half way through the reps.
12.   Leg Circles (left)
13.   Angel’s abs
-Start by dropping your knees to the left, go around, and up to the right, back down and around to starting position for one rep.
14.   Super swim
-Beginner: Do this movement for three 30 second intervals (with a rest in between each rep)
-Intermediate: Do this movement for three 45 second intervals
-Advanced: Do this movement for three 1 minute intervals
15.   Back sit ups

Hi Everyone!
Today’s workout is tough, but you are going to feel so great after you do it! I created this one to focus on abs, but as usual it’s still a full body workout. To get the most out of this workout make sure that you are using proper form, and moving from one exercise to the next as quickly as you can. That said, there were a few exercises that I needed to take a few seconds before continuing. Be sure to push yourself, but listen to your body!
I would love some feedback on what you thought of today’s workout and how it went for you. Feel free to leave a comment below.
Also, I just made a twitter account to keep people updated so they know when new workout videos are up. I’m new to twitter so I am just getting used to it, but if you’d like to follow me my name is BenderFitness.
Enjoy!

Rest and Muscles

Hi Everyone!

Yesterday was my rest day. It’s very important to take rest time and allow your body to heal after hard workouts. If you don’t give your muscles time to heal they don’t rebuild properly. Having muscles is the key to having a great metabolism, and aging well.

We tend to lose 2% of our muscle every year after the age of 40. This loss of muscle is what slows down our metabolism (and you thought it was just part of getting older!) So here’s an idea, keep working out, maintain your muscle mass, and maintain your metabolism! Also, working out strengthens your bones, helping to prevent other problems associated with aging, such as osteoperosis.

My field (occupational therapy) is focused on helping people to continue doing whatever is important to them in their lives, often after some type of injury or illness. There are things in life that sometimes happen that we can do nothing to prevent (accidents, natural disaster, etc). One thing that I can tell you for sure is that the more physically fit you are the higher your chance of recovery is. Plus the healthier you stay the more you decrease your chances of illness and injury in the future!

So start your personal fitness journey now. If you have any personal experiences or thoughts you would like to share post them in the comments below. I love to hear from you. I thought the quote below was relevant to today’s talk.

There will be a new workout up today so be sure to look for it a little bit later!

Thanks for reading!
Melissa
