Bender Fitness: 30 Day Challenge: Results Photos

Standard
Hi Everyone!

Seeing results photos is one of my favorite parts of Bender Fitness! Today I am happy to introduce you to Toni.

Toni is a Flight Attendant, and she was able to do the Original 30 Day Workout Challenge while traveling.

As you can see in the photos Toni took photos of her progress on Day one, two weeks into the challenge and on the final day. She is currently going through the challenge again for a second time, because she was so happy with the results the first time around!

As a former flight attendant, I can attest to the difficulties of healthy eating and staying committed to a fitness routine while traveling. Experiencing that lifestyle was part of the reason I decided to create my blog based around workouts you can do anywhere!

Kudos to Toni for sticking to the challenge, and sharing her results!

You can find all of the workouts Toni did here: Original 30 Day Workout Challenge. I would love to see your results too!

Melissa

PS: I have more than one 30 Day Challenge! You can find them here: 30 Day Fitness Challenges

Quick Burn and Sculpt: Home Workout: Wedding Workout Series

Standard
Hi Everyone!

Kristen is back for her final workout before her wedding on Saturday! As you can see from the pictures above she has made great progress. She has improved her fitness and her body is showing the results.

Her final pre-wedding workout routine is posted below.

You can find Kristen’s other Wedding Prep workouts here:
Wedding Boot Camp Tutorial  (this one is a tutorial instead of a full length workout)
Kristen’s favorite Bender Fitness workout is the Lower Body Challenge: All Around Workout. She also did some running and walking. She ran a 5K in April in 29 minutes and 43 seconds. I am very proud of her for all of her hard work and accomplishments!

On Day 1 (December 18, 2013) Kristen’s Measurements were as follows:
Waist: 29″
Hips: 41.5″
Thigh: 35.5″

Kristen’s current measurements (June 3, 2014) are:
Waist: 26.5″
Hips: 38.5″
Thigh: 22″

Kristen’s favorite meal is breakfast. Every morning she starts her day with an egg white omelet with spinach, turkey sausage, and whatever veggies she has in the house (zucchini, peppers, tomatoes). Sometimes she adds feta for a little bit of extra flavor. Kristen works full time, and goes to school full time, so she loves the fact that it’s fast to make and it gives her energy to get through her morning.
I hope you guys enjoy today’s workout. We had fun, and we definitely worked up a sweat! It’s a full body routine that will get your heart rate up, build lean muscle, and boost your metabolism.

Hope you’re ready!
Melissa

17 Lbs and Counting: One Woman’s Journey in Weight Loss and Philanthropy: Inspiration

Standard

Hi Everyone!

Today I am happy to share with you an inspiring weight loss success story. This summer my friend Rose started her journey to lose weight and make a difference in the world. For every ten pounds she loses she is making charitable donations to different causes, and blogging about her journey/experiences along the way.

You can find her blog here: My Change for a Ten and her facebook page here: My Change For a Ten Facebook.

Rose’s first charity included a donation of time and food to the homeless people of Skid Row and the Monday Night Mission.

Since starting her blog Rose has successfully lost and kept off 17 pounds, and she is going strong and getting healthier along the way.

Check out my interview with Rose below,
Melissa

Congratulations on losing your first 10 lbs! What made you decide to celebrate your success by donating to charity?

When I moved to California I felt myself feeling more connected to the universe and felt more of an overall sense of well being. I am one with nature and all creatures of the planet. I decided I wanted to help with charities as much as possible to give back and share my love of life. In 2012 I planned Downward Dog For Cats, a Yoga event in Griffith Park in Los Angeles to raise funds for a local animal shelter. At the same time my weight had become a lingering issue, and I was losing and gaining the same ten pounds for one year. I realized when I do something for charity I always follow through, but I did not have the same success with my weight loss. I am a former dancer and it had been my wish to return to my former shape and embrace turning 47 on the most positive note. I am also a poet writer, so in July 2013 I came up with the idea if I were to combine my love of making a difference with my weight loss and fitness goals I would not have any excuses, and I could write about my journey and the charities in a blog. When I decided to take on this venture my co-worker Mike who is now a good friend offered to be my personal trainer and help me with the charities. The first week of my blog I was cast in a Richard Simmons video, all of these things came together at the exact time and I was so inspired and ready to take on my new challenge. Of course my best friend Melissa Bender has always been such an inspiration. Her journey is awe inspiring and she always looks to help people be a better version of who they are. I could not have started this without the help of my friends.

What have you been doing to achieve your fitness/health goals?
In the beginning I walked daily, and went to Richard Simmons classes following the video. He is very inspiring. I have been working out with my trainer Mike once a week since July, and I attend Yogaworks in West Hollywood three to five times a week. I attend yoga at Pink Iron with Nicole once a week. I am now running with Mike, and on my own. I am a beginner runner but I am determined to take on this new challenge and he thinks I can do a 5k soon. When at home I do Melissa Bender videos and her yoga videos. I plan to return to ballet classes eventually. I eat extremely healthy, and I watch my sodium, fat , cholesterol and portion sizes. In three months I have not allowed myself a cheat day, but come Thanksgiving I will cheat with a little abandon.

What is your first charity?
My first charity is The Monday Night Mission. They are a group who feeds the homeless at Skid Row in Los Angeles Monday through Friday evenings. I donated food and also donated dinner courtesy of my employers at Seasons 52 in Century City California. When I told Seasons 52 what I was doing they offered to donate food on my behalf. Chef Jessica prepared an amazing pasta and chicken dish with baguettes. I am so grateful to Chef Jessica and the whole management team for their support. I also donated my time and service to the cause. Helping the homeless has always been a goal for me. I wrote a poem about the subject when I lived in NYC. https://www.facebook.com/mondaynightmission
What made you choose them?
I have been following their Facebook Page and I have wanted to help them for some time. The work they do is truly selfless and beautiful. No soul forgotten.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
The way everyone comes together for the better of mankind. No egos, no judgement. We are all the same, connected to the core that is our humanity. The people who serve and donate are selfless angels.
Most difficult part?
The reality of the injustices that occur right under our noses. Skid Row is tragic, and Mel from The Monday Night Mission took us on a tour of Skid Row after our service and it was terribly disturbing and sad. Afterwards I was emotionally numb until the middle of the night. At that point the emotions and tears flowed and I was able to write about my experience. I plan to assist them again in the near future.
Who helped you on your first mission?
Mike was on board since the beginning, so it was Mike, his girlfriend Maria, my friend Courtney, her boyfriend Danny and of course myself. Chef Jessica and Seasons 52 helped with the amazing donated dinner.
What is your next charity?
I am currently searching for a 20 pound charity. My original twenty pound charity is now my thirty pound charity since it is going to take more planning. Since the holidays are approaching I was thinking about spending some time at a Nursing Home during December as my 20 pound goal. I am researching at the moment.
How close are you to your next weight loss goal?
I am 3 pounds away from my 20 pound weight loss goal and charity but I do not do the charity until I am five pounds past the weight milestone. That way I know the weight is off for good even if my weight fluctuates.
Has your fitness program changed at all along the way?
It has evolved. Mike changes up our workouts always, and I have excelled at some of the exercise moves that were so difficult in the beginning. My yoga practice is evolving as well, I am so much stronger and I can now do wheel pose on my head and I did my first shoulder stand. I am now running, something I thought I would never attempt.
What inspires you to keep going on days you don’t feel like it?
I am truly enjoying the process as well as the results and I love to exercise and do yoga. Knowing I am able to help with charities and in the meantime become healthier and stronger keeps me moving forward. I have people telling my that my journey is inspiring them. I believe we all are here to motivate and inspire each other. My saying is to remove the letter e from the word ego and just go for it.
Favorite healthy food:
I am obsessed with Think Thin Bars, Brownie Crunch. They are sugar free, gluten free and at six am in the morning I enjoy one with my cup of coffee. I am also great at making healthy vegetarian soups and chili. Just tonight I made a Lentil and Black bean Chili with sweet potatoes and assorted vegetables. My husband James loves my soups and has become healthier as well and is also starting his own fitness journey. He has lost 16 pounds since I began my mission. I am rubbing off on him and he is extremely grateful. He now speed walks over an hour a day and has an extra pep in his step.
Favorite Workout Move:
Balance poses, I have amazing balance.
Favorite moment on your journey:
I have a few and it is all about the people that have touched me along the way. The Richard Simmons video was amazing. Getting to know Mr Simmons has been a blessing and he is so inspiring. At the video I made three new friends. Francie who I have become very close with, and Susan and Joanne who I will see in November when they visit Los Angeles. Getting to know Mike, who went from being a co-worker who I did not know at all, to becoming my inspiring trainer and good friend. The Monday Night Mission and all the people who give so much of themselves. I am humbled by the beauty of humanity. I have become so liberated, and I am conquering my fears along the way.
Overall goal:
I was 197 pounds when I began and I am now 180 pounds. I hope to reach 130-140. That gives me a lot of time to help more charities and I am up for the challenge. I also plan to improve on my running, and do a few 5k’s in the future. I want to eventually take ballet classes and ballroom/latin classes again. To improve and evolve in my yoga practice, and eventually to get certified so I can help others as I have been helped.

Pregnancy Progress Pics and Workouts: Meg 10 Weeks After Baby

Standard
By far my favorite part of having my blog is when people share their progress pictures with me! Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to Meg.

Meg is a full time graduate student. She is studying to be a nurse practitioner. She also works as an RN, and is the mom of a beautiful 10 week old baby! She is very busy, and doesn’t have hours per day to spend working out.

Meg said: “Needless to say, I don’t have much time or energy to spare these days. My husband found your page for me, and the short, intense, no-equipment-required workouts get results and fit my schedule. I still have a long way to go on my fitness journey, but your page is a valuable resource that I now recommend to friends and patients alike.”

In picture number one Meg is 9 months pregnant and weighs 145 pounds. In picture two (taken yesterday) she weighs 115 pounds.

Meg and her family are about to embark on an exciting trip, and during it she is going to continue to challenge herself with my workouts. She is going to send in another picture in about a month to show us her progress. I can’t wait to see her continuation of her fitness journey! What better gift can you give yourself, and your family than increased health and energy?

Meg’s Workouts:
“I mostly followed your bikini competition prep month 1 schedule (working at the intermediate rep/time recommendations, usually repeating twice). I also did the fitness transformation workouts because I found if I was cheering for Josh there were fewer thoughts dedicated to my own struggles/discomfort . My favorite workout so far though has been the 10 minute quickie posted this week; I loved the burn from the side step leg lifts!”

Congratulations Meg and thank you for sharing your journey! You’re an inspiration. Stay strong, healthy, and fit!

Karissa’s 3 Week Progress Pictures!

Standard
Hi Everyone!

One of my absolute favorite things about my blog, is getting the chance to see people’s progress pictures and hear their success stories!

Karissa sent me a great message, sharing her story and her photos. Karissa has lost over 5 kg (about 11 pounds) over the course of three weeks by incorporating my workouts.

In the first picture (Week 0) Karissa had already been doing running and walking. She had some results, and noticed that her stomach got smaller. For the photos in weeks 1 and 2 she started following my workouts, and got the amazing results you see above!

I want to thank Karissa for sharing her photos. It is inspiring to see someone set a goal, work hard, and achieve what they are working for. She made the effort, and the outcome speaks for it’s self! She looks stronger, more toned, and more fit.

Congratulations Karissa! Your hard work has paid off! 🙂

Jenny’s Progress Pics! Great Results in only 3 Months!

Standard

Last night I logged in to my facebook account and I found this picture posted to my wall, with the following note:

Hi Melissa,

i started following you and your workouts in June 2012
i weighted 154lbs
bust 39″
waist 29″
hips 42″

i am so happy to report my measurements today 10/17

my weight today 145
bust 38″
waist 27.5″
hips 40″

although i was happy with my curvy figure i was so excited and ready to get lean and strong after a 6 month hiatus from working out…i was tired of going to the gym for 1-2 hrs 5-6x a week; working out hard and not seeing the results i wanted….i look leaner and i feel so much stronger…
thank you!

Jenny looks amazing, strong and lean. She has clearly been working very hard to increase her level of fitness and as a result her body is looking even more toned and firm. She still has fantastic curves, and her workouts have emphasized her feminine shape. I love the fact that she doesn’t have to spend 1-2 hours in the gym 5-6X per week to get these results.

Jenny, a big thank you to you for sharing your progress. I set out to inspire people to improve their health and fitness, and you are proof that it is working. All of the hard work, and credit goes to you, because you are the only one who can chose to put in the effort and make the changes. Thank you for working out with me. My workouts are tough, and you have clearly risen to that challenge.

I hope this photo inspires you as much as it has inspired me. Being healthy and fit is the best gift you can give to yourself, and the people who love you. Don’t be afraid to start. You can improve the quality of your life today. 🙂

If you have progress pictures please feel free to share them!
Melissa

Carla is on a Bender! Before and After.

Standard

Hi Everyone,

Meet Carla! She has been following my workouts for quite some time now, and she was nice enough to send me some pictures of her results! She has also shared a delicious recipe: Organic Blueberry Frozen Yogurt
Carla has been getting some phenomenal results! The best part is that her results aren’t just physical. She looks great, but she has also embraced the fit lifestyle.

  • Carla: “…at first, working out was my strive to look good and healthy again but now it’s taken a whole different level. It’s almost like a spiritual growth because when I fall or can’t do an exercise, I just push myself to do it again and again until I get it. I really needed to teach myself that kind of attitude, and it’s the one thing that no one can teach you or do for you. It has to come from within. Now if i don’t workout one day, I feel incomplete. Sort of like that movie Jerry Mcguire, I say: burpees! you complete me! … and the burpees reply: Carla you had me at 20 reps ! hahahahahaha! … but seriously, exercise is a continuous effort. It should never be stopped.”

” The hardest thing is to keep the discipline every day, especially because i have 2 very physical jobs besides my singing career. I have my own dog walking business which makes me walk up to 9 hours straight out there and i’m a superintendent in a building here in Toronto. But I always, always, always make time for my workouts. No matter what or how tired i am, i always do them and even when i’m really exhausted i will find myself one that isn’t too too challenging but I still do them.”

Carla is a singer. You can hear her music at: Lords of Hera Be sure to check her out!
